Waves Conclude Regular Season at Azusa Pacific

Malibu, Calif. — The Pepperdine track team will compete at its final meet of the 2021 regular season at Azusa Pacific's Last Chance Meet on May 14-15.
Freshman Elle Shrader (Boerne, Texas./Boerne-Samuel V. Champion HS) will kick off the action will be Waves in the first heat of the women's 1,500 on Friday night at around 7:30 p.m. School-record-holder Brandon Davis (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) will be the first Wave to run on Saturday in the third heat of the 400 meters, which is scheduled to start at around 2:45 p.m.
In a sense, finishing the regular season at Azusa Pacific will be a fitting conclusion for the Waves, as four of the six new school records set this year occurred at APU. And, unlike last weekend's meet at the West Coast Distance Carnival, Pepperdine will bring a significantly larger group to APU to close out the season.
Per APU policy, spectators will not be permitted, but live results can be found at FinishedResults.com.
ÂLAST TIME OUT
Pepperdine took a smaller squad than usual up north to the West Coast Distance Carnival last weekend.
Standout performances included junior Karl Winter (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS) adding to his litany of school records by running a 1:51.47 in the 800-meter dash, plus Olivia Miller (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles HS) setting a new collegiate best in the 800 meters with a 2:23.21, albeit running unattached.
Sophomore Skyler Danley (Easton, Pa./Easton Area HS) also placed fifth in her heat of the 5K with a 19:02.63.
ÂFROM THE HEAT SHEET
On Friday night, 11 Pepperdine runners will race in the 1,500 meters — one of two open events scheduled for day one.
Of that group, seniors Justin Touhey (Stony Point, N.Y./Don Bosco Preparatory HS) and Preston Gromer (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh HS), plus Johnathan Flint (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) will have the best competition of the night in the third heat of the men's 1,500 meters. Racing in a field of 19 runners separated by five seconds on the heat sheet, the Pepperdine trio will be gunning for sub-four-minute times for the first time in their collegiate careers.
Over on the women's side, juniors Annelies Ondersma (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett School) and Riley Wright (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol HS) will return to the site where they ran lifetime PRs in the 1,500. They will run together in heat two, whereas Miller will run unattached once again in heat three of the same event.
A full schedule of events is on deck for Saturday, starting with the aforementioned Davis in the 400-meter-dash. In the next event, fellow school-record-holder Kennedy Kerr (West Hempstead, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) will attempt to lower her school record in the 100-meter dash.
The Waves' regular season will conclude with Kyle McCabe (Westminster, Colo./Holy Family HS) running in the fast heat of the men's 5,000 meters. McCabe, whose last 5K was a 14:37.16 at the Franson Classic on April 10, looks to improve on his time that currently ranks fourth all-time at Pepperdine.
