MALIBU, California — The Pepperdine women's soccer team closes out the regular season with a road trip to Gonzaga. The Waves are looking to solidify a third-place finish in the West Coast Conference, which would be their sixth top-three finish in the last seven years.
MATCH #12 — Saturday (April 17) at Luger Field in Spokane, Washington: Pepperdine (6-4-1, 5-2-1) at Gonzaga (6-3-1, 4-2-1) at 12 p.m.
WATCH/ONLINE — The match will be streamed online on the WCC Network. Links to broadcasts and live stats can be found at PepperdineWaves.com.
OPPONENT — Pepperdine is 19-5-3 all-time against Gonzaga. The Waves are unbeaten in the last nine meetings (7-0-2). Pepperdine won 2-0 at home in 2019. The last trip to Spokane resulted in a scoreless draw in 2018. The Waves are 7-3-3 in road games against Gonzaga.
LAST MATCH — The Waves doubled up #16 BYU in shots, 16-8, but the Cougars earned a 2-1 win in Malibu last Saturday. The Waves had an impressive 20 minutes to start the match and were unlucky not to score a couple of times. The Cougars scored on their first shot in the 26th minute and added another goal in the 60th minute. Leyla McFarland got one back for the Waves in the 68th minute, but they were unable to equalize and the Cougars won in Malibu for the first time since 2012.
AWARDS — Pepperdine won four consecutive WCC Defensive Player of the Week awards in March ... Trinity Watson received the honor on March 9 (after a shutout win vs. San Francisco in which she assisted on the game-winning goal) and on March 16 (after her two-goal game at Pacific). She's also been named to the Top Drawer Soccer national team of the week twice (Feb. 16, after she scored the game's first goal against USD, and March 9) ... Zoe Clevely received the WCC award on March 2 (after the shutout win at Saint Mary's, which included a save on a penalty kick) and on March 22 (after a career-high-tying seven saves in the shutout at Portland) ... Emily Sample (March 2) and Joelle Anderson (April 6) have also been named to Top Drawer Soccer's national team of the week.
NOTABLE — Pepperdine outshot the opponent in each of the first seven games and in 10 of 11 overall ... Ten different players have scored the Waves' 25 goals this season (Leyla McFarland, Tori Waldeck and Trinity Watson lead with four apiece) ... Pepperdine's four losses this season have come to teams ranked #3, #4, #11 and #16 in the country at the time of the contest ... The three-time All-WCC pick and two-time All-West Region honoree has accumulated 24 goals (eighth all-time at Pepperdine), 10 game-winning goals (sixth), 16 assists and 64 points (eighth) in her career. Anderson was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy preseason watch list.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 25 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
