MALIBU, California – Senior middle blocker Austin Wilmot of the #4 Pepperdine men's volleyball team picked up his second Mountain Pacific Sports Federation/Molten Defensive Player of the Week award of the season today.
In a two-match split against then-#8 UCLA last week, Wilmot (Valley Village, Calif./Crespi Carmelite HS/UC Irvine) posted 14 blocks in nine sets, a 1.56 average. He had nine blocks in Saturday's four-set victory in Firestone Fieldhouse, matching the most by any MPSF player this season. Wilmot has led the team (or tied for the team lead) in blocks in nine of 11 matches this season, and he's averaging 1.10 blocks per set for the season.
Wilmot's defense helped him to average a team-best 3.00 points per set over the two matches. He had a strong week offensively as well, hitting .500 (17-3-28). He hit a career-high .550 (12-1-20) in Saturday's victory and had a career-best two service aces.
Wilmot also received Defensive Player of the Week honors on Feb. 22. Spencer Wickens is also a two-time MPSF honoree this season (offensive honors on Feb. 1 and March 1), while Trey Cole (Feb. 1) won the first defensive award of the season.
Pepperdine (8-3) has a big weekend ahead as the Waves will host second-ranked and first-place BYU (10-2) on both Friday and Saturday (March 19-20) at 1 p.m. Both matches will be shown online via WaveCasts. Due to COVID-19 protocols, spectators are not permitted.
