MALIBU, California — Three non-conference tune-ups are in the books and now the Pepperdine women's soccer team gets started with its West Coast Conference schedule at Saint Mary's this weekend.
MATCH #4 — Saturday (February 27) at Saint Mary's Stadium in Moraga, California: Pepperdine (1-2-0, 0-0-0) at Saint Mary's (0-1-2, 0-0-1) at 1 p.m.
WATCH/ONLINE — Saint Mary's will stream the match on the WCC Network. Links to broadcasts and live stats can be found at PepperdineWaves.com.
OPPONENT — Pepperdine is 13-8-4 all-time against Saint Mary's. The Gaels have been a problem of late, as the two schools are 2-2-2 in the last six seasons. Before that, Pepperdine had won eight in a row. In 2019, however, the Waves posted a 4-0 victory at home. Pepperdine junior Kelsey Hill gets to play against her former team for the first time.
LAST WEEK — The Waves nearly shocked #3 Stanford for the second straight season, but the reigning national champs scored twice in the final eight minutes to claim a 2-1 win in Palo Alto last Friday. Freshman Victoria Romero had given the Waves the lead in the 71st minute with her first career goal. The Waves outshot the Cardinal, 14-10.
AWARDS — Trinity Watson was named to Top Drawer Soccer's national team of the week on Feb. 16 after she scored the game's first goal against USD.
ANDERSON — Senior midfielder Joelle Anderson was picked in the third round of the 2021 NWSL Draft by the Houston Dash, but she's got business to finish in Malibu before she joins the pros. The three-time All-WCC pick (two-time first team) and two-time All-West Region honoree (2019 first team) has accumulated 21 goals (eight game-winners), 13 assists and 55 points in her career. She's tied for ninth all-time in goals at Pepperdine. Anderson has been named to the MAC Hermann Trophy preseason watch list.
WCC — The Waves were picked to finish third in the WCC preseason coaches poll. The order went as follows: BYU, Santa Clara, Pepperdine, Gonzaga, Portland, San Francisco, San Diego, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's and Pacific ... Joelle Anderson and Trinity Watson, who made the All-WCC first team in 2019, both made the preseason All-WCC team.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 25 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
