2/18/2021 12:35:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MALIBU, California — This weekend's planned West Coast Conference opener between Pepperdine and Santa Clara was postponed, but instead of sitting around and waiting for another week, the Waves quickly pivoted and have scheduled a non-conference road game at #3 Stanford.
MATCH #3 — Friday (February 19) at Maloney Field/Cagan Stadium in Palo Alto, California: Pepperdine (1-1-0) at #3 Stanford (0-0-0) at 1 p.m.
WATCH/ONLINE — Stanford will webstream the match through the Pac-12 website. Links to broadcasts and live stats can be found at PepperdineWaves.com.
OPPONENT — Pepperdine is 2-0-0 all-time against Stanford. The Waves beat a fourth-ranked Stanford team 1-0 on the road in 2003, and then pulled off one of the biggest wins in program history in 2019 with a 1-0 home victory against the #2 Cardinal. That was Stanford's only loss en route to a national championship. In fact, the Waves are the only team to beat the Cardinal in the last 800+ days. The programs share a set of siblings: Pepperdine's Skylar Enge and Kam Pickett and Stanford's Sierra Enge and Kiki Pickett.
LAST WEEK — Pepperdine earned its first win of the season with a 4-1 non-conference victory at San Diego last Friday. The Waves outshot the Toreros 23-3 and got goals from Trinity Watson, Emily Sample, Tori Waldeck and Leyla McFarland. It was the first career goals for Sample and Waldeck.
AWARDS — Trinity Watson was named to Top Drawer Soccer's national team of the week on Feb. 16 after she scored the game's first goal against USD.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 25 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
