Waves Stuff Latest Edition of ITA Rankings

MALIBU, California – Both the Pepperdine men's and women's tennis programs were well-represented when the latest rankings were released by the ITA on Wednesday morning following the completion of the fall tennis season.

On the women's side, six Waves were represented in singles: junior Lisa Zaar (#10), sophomore Taisiya Pachkaleva (#18), graduate student Victoria Flores (#30), graduate student Shiori Fukuda (#31), freshman Savannah Broadus (#36) and sophomore Janice Tjen (#93). In doubles, the pairs of Flores/Zaar and Flores/Tjen were ranked 11th and 17th, respectively. The men also had six selected to the singles rankings: senior Daniel De Jonge (#8), graduate student Andrew Rogers (#15), sophomore Pietro Fellin (#24), senior Tim Zeitvogel (#72), junior Eric Hadigian (#99) and senior Enrique Luque Rico (#101).

Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) Zaar was one of the top performers for the Waves this fall, as she claimed the singles title at the ITA Southwest Regional on her way to a 13-4 fall singles record. Zaar found success in doubles as well with a record of 8-3 and a finals berth with Flores in the ITA Southwest Regional as well. She looks to carry momentum over from her strong sophomore season, where she earned All-WCC honorable mention honors in both singles and doubles while earning WCC All-Academic first team. From February 13 to May 19, Zaar won 19 straight singles matches and had the clinch point in the road win over #25 Stanford on April 2.

Taisiya Pachkaleva (Moscow, Russia) begins her second year in Malibu after an impressive fall that saw her knock off the top seed at the ITA All-American Championships while advancing to the semifinals of that event. Pachkaleva earned a singles record of 8-2 in the fall. As a freshman, she was named the ITA Regional Rookie of the Year in 2021 while earning the WCC Freshman of the Year honor. Pachkaleva was All-WCC first team in singles and All-WCC honorable mention in doubles. Pachkaleva won the clinch point against previously unbeaten North Carolina to send the Waves to the national championship match for the first time.

Victoria Flores (Fort Dodge, Iowa) completed her only fall in Malibu in style, advancing all the way to the consolation final of the ITA All-American Championships. She and Zaar were also finalists of the doubles competition at the ITA Southwest Regional. A Georgia Tech transfer, she burst onto the scene as a junior in 2019-20, earning ITA doubles All-American honors. During that season, she was ranked as high as number six nationally in ITA doubles rankings while coming in at number 41 in singles. In her last season in Atlanta, Flores earned at-large berths to both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships after being named All-ACC second team.

Shiori Fukuda (Tokyo, Japan) claimed the singles and doubles titles at the Jack Kramer Invite this fall on her way to a singles record of 12-3. Fukuda returns for her final season in Malibu after earning All-WCC first team honors in both singles and doubles with the Waves in 2021. The Ohio State transfer was an ITA All-American with the Buckeyes in 2020 while being named the 2020 Ohio State Big Ten Athlete of the Year.

Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) readies for her first spring season at Pepperdine after a wildly successful fall campaign. The 2019 Junior Wimbledon doubles champion and 2020 Junior Australian Open doubles semifinalist went 12-2 in singles in the fall while winning the singles title at the Battle of the Bay. The pair of Broadus and Anastasia Iamachkine claimed the doubles title at the Battle of the Bay, and Broadus also won the doubles title at the Jack Kramer Invite with Fukuda.

Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) enters her first season in Malibu after playing her freshman season at Oregon. This fall with the Waves, she had a singles record of 3-2, and went a combined 5-2 in doubles with Flores and Broadus. She became just the third player in Oregon program history to earn ITA All-America status following her historic freshman season, where she ended the season at #6 in the ITA singles rankings. Tjen was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and ITA Northwest Region Rookie of the Year after advancing to the national semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship.

Daniel De Jonge (Vlissingen, Netherlands) went 12-3 in singles this fall while reaching the round of 32 at the ITA All-American Championships. He teamed up with Linus Carlsson Halldin to win the doubles title at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. De Jonge was named the ITA Regional Rookie of the Year in 2020 while going undefeated in dual doubles with partner Adrian Oetzbach. He also went 6-2 from the #1 singles position.

Andrew Rogers (Brentwood, Tennessee) claimed the singles title at the ITA Southwest Regional and advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Fall Nationals as well. Rogers, a Tennessee graduate transfer, begins his time at Malibu after amassing an overall singles record of 52-23 at Tennessee while going 50-36 in doubles.

Pietro Fellin (Milan, Italy) broke out in a big way this fall, going 14-4 in singles and reaching the final of the ITA Southwest Regional. He had a perfect 3-0 record at the North Ranch Invite and reached the consolation final of the ITA Fall National Championships. As a freshman in 2021, Fellin went 9-5 in overall singles with a 3-0 record in conference play while playing mainly at the #6 position. He did not drop a set throughout conference play.

Tim Zeitvogel (Baden-Baden, Germany) reached the singles round of 32 at the ITA Southwest Regional and teamed up with Corrado Summaria to advance to the quarterfinals in doubles at the ITA Southwest Regional. He prepares for his final season in Malibu after going unbeaten as a junior and having not lost a dual singles match since March 20, 2019. Zeitvogel was named All-WCC singles honorable mention in 2019 while going undefeated in WCC regular season play.

Eric Hadigian (Sacramento, Calif.), a Gonzaga transfer, went 15-6 this fall. He went 3-0 at the North Ranch Invite and advanced to the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships after going 7-0 in the prequalifying and qualifying rounds. He teamed up with Luque Rico to make a run to the round of 16 in doubles at the ITA Southwest Regional. While at Gonzaga during the 2019-20 season, Hadigian posted a 14-6 overall record before the season was cut short due to COVID-19.

Enrique Luque Rico (Cordoba, Spain) prepares for his last season in a Waves uniform after a 10-3 fall campaign in singles. He advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Southwest Regional in both singles and doubles. Luque Rico also posted solid outings at the UCSB Classic, finishing as runner-up, and at the North Ranch Invite where he went a perfect 3-0 on the weekend. As a sophomore in 2020, he went 6-2 in dual singles.

Both programs are preparing to kick off their respective seasons in January. The men open up on Friday, January 21 at Stanford, while the season opener for the women is Saturday, January 22 at home against California. The home opener for the men is Sunday, January 23 against Arizona.
