Men's Volleyball Hosts UCSB for 1980s Night

MALIBU, California — The #9 Pepperdine men's volleyball team plays #3 UC Santa Barbara for the second time in six days as the schools meet again on Wednesday in Firestone Fieldhouse.
As part of their 50 seasons celebration, the Waves will honor the decade of the 1980s on Wednesday.
MATCH #12 — Wednesday (February 26) at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, California: #9 Pepperdine (6-5) vs. #3 UC Santa Barbara (10-2) at 7 p.m.
WATCH/ONLINE — Wednesday's home match will be streamed online via WaveCasts with Pepperdine Hall of Famer Al Epstein on the call. Links to broadcasts and live stats can be found at PepperdineWaves.com.
TICKETS — Single-match tickets at Firestone Fieldhouse cost $10 each for adults and $8 each for children under 12, seniors 65+ and alumni/Crest members. Faculty and staff are free with their Pepperdine ID. Groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets for $5 each.
OPPONENT — Pepperdine is 72-36 all-time against UCSB. The Waves had won three in a row and four of five before the Gauchos won in Santa Barbara last week.
LAST WEEK — The Waves suffered a pair of road losses to ranked opponents, falling at #3 UC Santa Barbara in three sets and #13 Grand Canyon in four sets. The Waves took the first set off of the Lopes before dropping the next three. Stat leaders for the week included Noah Dyer (3.14 kills/set), Joe Karlous (8.57 assists/set and 2.29 digs/set) and JT Ardell (1.43 blocks/set).
NCAA STATS — Austin Wilmot ranks ninth nationally in hitting percentage (.425) and 18th in blocks (1.02).
NEW LOOK — After graduating the bulk of last year's lineup, the Waves have a much different look in 2020. 75.0% of the kills so far have been recorded by players not in last year's regular rotation, and 54.9% of have been made by players in their first year on the court for Pepperdine (including redshirts and transfers).
NEXT — Pepperdine is off until a week from Friday (March 6) when the Waves host Saint Francis in a non-conference match.
50 SEASONS — This is the 50th season for Pepperdine men's volleyball — which began in 1971 — and the program's rich history will be celebrated throughout this spring's schedule. All Pepperdine men's volleyball alums will be welcomed back for the March 15 match vs. Harvard. The Waves will also celebrate each decade at various matches, including February 26 vs. UCSB (1980s), March 11 vs. Jamestown (1990s), March 21 vs. NJIT (2000s) and April 11 vs. Stanford (2010s).
AVCA POLL — Pepperdine opened the 2020 season at #9 in the AVCA rankings. The Waves have been as high as tied at #6, but they're back at #9 this week. Last season, they stayed between #6 (where they started) and #3 (where they finished) the entire year.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall.
