MALIBU, California – The 50th season of the Pepperdine men's volleyball program will get underway next week with a series of exhibition games ahead of the home opener. Much is planned this spring as the Waves celebrate a half-century as one of the nation's top teams.
The Waves will play three consecutive home exhibitions against the likes of Guelph (Monday, Dec. 30, 7 p.m.), Princeton (Tuesday, Dec. 31, 4 p.m.) and Brandon (Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1 p.m.). Then, on Sunday, January 5, the Waves officially begin the 2020 campaign against Cal Lutheran at 3 p.m. in Firestone Fieldhouse.
Pepperdine is coming off a best-in-a-decade season that saw the Waves go 23-7 overall and win both MPSF regular-season and tournament titles. Pepperdine advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008 and beat Princeton in the quarterfinals before falling to host Long Beach State in the semifinals.
The Waves have won five national championships in their first 49 seasons, second-most among any men's volleyball program. They've produced a National Player of the Year nine times, and 58 different Waves have earned All-American honors a total of 104 times, including 47 first-team selections. At least one Pepperdine men's volleyball player has competed at each of the last nine summer Olympics.
The biggest event of the season will take place over the weekend of March 13-15, when all Pepperdine men's volleyball alumni will be welcomed back to campus. The Waves face UCLA on Friday, March 13. On Saturday, March 14, alums will be given the chance to interact with the 2020 Waves and then enjoy their own practice. The weekend culminates on Sunday, March 15, with a home match against Harvard and a reception for all of the alums in attendance.
The Waves will also celebrate each decade of volleyball at various other matches throughout the season, beginning with the 1970s on Wednesday, February 12, against Concordia-Irvine.
