MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine women's volleyball team fell to 8th-ranked Washington in a three-set bout in Firestone on Friday night, ending day one of the Asics Classic with a split day on 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 final scores. The Waves (5-3) downed Wyoming in straight sets in the afternoon match.
Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) led the team with nine kills, while adding two aces and four blocks including a solo rejection. Jasmine Gross (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) commanded the defensive net with nine blocks including a solo denial, and added six kills.

Pepperdine dominated the net with 12.0 team blocks, including 18 block assists and three solos. The opposition totaled 9.0 team blocks including 18 block assists. The 8th-ranked Huskies put the attack on the Waves throughout the match, amassing a .219 success rate on 42 kills, compared to the home team's 28 kills on a .074 clip. Washington also posted six aces, 40 assists and 39 digs, while Pepperdine marked three aces, 25 assists and 30 digs.

In the first set, the opposition pulled ahead to a 13-10 advantage, but the Waves evened the score at the 15-15 mark. After exchanging ties and leads en route to a 23-23 tie, the Huskies posted two on the board for a 25-23 set one win and an early match lead.
The second set moved similarly, with Washington taking a 10-7 lead early, but the Waves rolling back for a 17-15 lead of the team's own late in the set. The Huskies then evened the score at 17's and continued to hammer the attack for a 25-18 second set win and 2-0 advantage on the night.
There was a solid attack effort on both sides in the third set, but Washington had the momentum and used it toward an early lead and a 25-20 set win to complete the straight-set victory.
