
Pepperdine Splits Opening Day of Nevada Wolf Pack Invitational

RENO, Nev. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team split the opening day of the Nevada Wolf Pack Invitational on Friday at the Virginia Street Gym. In the tournament hosted by Nevada, the Waves first fell to Missouri in straight sets before defeating Sacramento State in sweeping fashion.
In the first match, the Waves fell with 25-22, 25-21 and 33-31 final set scores and in the second match, Pepperdine won with 25-22, 25-16 and 26-24 set scores. Jasmine Gross (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) led the Waves' attack in both matches, including with a tied career-best 15 kills in the second match. She also hit for 13 kills in the first match. Hannah Frohling (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North HS) also hit for double-figure kills with 10 and 13 kills in each match respectively. Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) also marked a career-high 43 assists in the match against the Hornets.

In the second set, the Waves once again worked ahead after an early 8-8 tie, amassing a 16-11 lead fueled by the attack efforts of Frohling. Pepperdine continued to build the gap en route to a 21-14 lead late in the set after Gross and Frohling smashes. Gross delivered the final kill for a 25-16 set win and a 2-0 match lead heading into intermission.
Sacramento State opened up the third set with an 8-6 advantage and held the lead for a majority. After an 18-22 deficit, nine tied scores and six lead changes, the Waves staged a comeback. Pepperdine tied the match at 23's on Gross' 15th kill, tying her career-best effort. With the new momentum, the Waves picked up three-consecutive blocks courtesy of two from Harris and O'Harra and one from O'Harra and Dyer, to win the match 3-0 after a 26-24 final set score.

The second set was as close as the first with 14 tied scores and six lead changes. After a final 15-15 tie, the Tigers once again pulled ahead and gathered momentum, this time towards a 25-21 set win to pull ahead 2-0 on the day.
Pepperdine broke out of the starting gate in the third set, posting 14-8 and 19-11 scores on top of smashes from O'Harra and Gross. The opposition came back late in the set to tie things up at 24's. Despite a strong effort by the Waves to hang on to the lead, the Tigers put up a strong offensive to take the 33-31 set win and overall 3-0 match victory.
