SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Santa Clara University this Saturday afternoon at the Leavey Center. After a comeback 30-28 first set win, the Broncos downed the Waves 25-10, 25-11 and 25-14 en route to the West Coast Conference victory.
The Waves (8-12, 2-6 WCC) posted a .132 hitting percentage on 43 kills, while adding five aces, 55 digs and 7.0 team blocks. In opposition, the Broncos (12-8, 3-5 WCC) tabbed a .326 attack output on top of 57 kills, while amassing 12 aces, 72 digs and 14.0 team blocks throughout the match.
Sophomore Tarah Wylie (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) and freshman Hannah Frohling (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North HS) led the Waves with 10 kills apiece. Wylie posted an impressive .409 hitting percentage on her 10 kills after tabbing only one error on 22 swings. She added a solid three aces, three digs and two blocks for the Waves.
Freshman Jasmine Gross (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) was big at the net with five blocks including two solo rejections. She added six kills. Sophomore Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) added eight kills, an ace and eight digs for Pepperdine.
Sophomores Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) and Jenna Tunnell (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) served as primary playmakers for the Waves with 14 assists apiece. Dyer added four kills and six digs and Tunnell was good for three kills, seven digs and an ace. Freshman libero Hana Lishman also led Pepperdine with 11 digs in four sets.
The first set of the match had multiple aces as the Broncos picked up the first point on top of Mary Shepherd's ace. Then, Wylie reciprocated for the Waves with three consecutive aces herself to put the Waves up 4-2. After a 6-6 tie, the opposition went on a 7-2 run to go up 13-8 over Pepperdine. The Waves were not deterred, however, and started working back into the set to close the gap 18-17 late. In a late surge of momentum, the Waves worked to tie the set at 23's and the teams then went point-for-point towards the 28-28 mark. Back-to-back kills from Lyons earned the edge for Pepperdine, though, and the Waves started the day with a 30-28 victory.
With the advantage in Pepperdine's court, Santa Clara came out strong in the second, amassing a 8-1 lead on a strong attack output. Three consecutive aces from Callie Jones did not help the cause either and after the 12-2 lead, the Broncos kept putting points on the board until the 25-10 win.
The third set was similar to the second, and a strong serving output put the home team ahead 8-1 to start. The Waves littered points throughout the set, but the Broncos were successful in shutting Pepperdine down to collect a 2-1 lead on a 25-11 set win.
The advantage was in SCU's court in the fourth as well, and the home team posted a quick 11-4 lead to go ahead early. Strong serves from the Broncos played part again and late in the set, Santa Clara held the 21-10 lead that eventually turned into the 25-14 set win for the four-set WCC victory.
