SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 10 Pepperdine women's soccer team scored its second-straight overtime victory to start the season on Sunday, downing North Carolina State 1-0 with a goal in the 92nd minute.
Taylor Alvarado (Santa Paula, Calif./Santa Paula HS) chipped a ball over the Wolfpack keeper's head just under two minutes into overtime to help the Waves move to 2-0. Pepperdine started the season on Friday with an overtime win over Cal State Northridge in the 94th minute.
After coming up short in regulation despite getting the bulk of the opportunities, Pepperdine scored on its only shot of the overtime period. Alvarado received the pass from Amanda LeCave (Windsor, Calif./Windsor HS) and was able to score her first goal of the year with the chip shot. Alvarado was tied for second on the team with four goals last year.
The Waves controlled the tempo of play throughout most of the contest, outshooting NC State 13-3 through 90 minutes of play. Pepperdine put seven balls on target, while all three Wolfpack shots were on goal.
NC State's final shot of regulation came with just seconds left on the clock as Caitlyn Boch sent a header on target that Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) snagged out of the air to send the game to extra time.
The Waves also had a late opportunity as Kristen Rodriguez (Inglewood, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) got a shot off with a minute to play that went just wide. Pepperdine had a good chance early in the second half as well, when Courtney Assumma (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley HS) got two looks inside the box that were both stopped by the Wolfpack's keeper Sydney Wootten.
Rylee Baisden (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) led all players with five shots in the game and Bri Visalli (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS) had three attempts. The Waves also won the corner kick battle, 4-1.
Three different players got shots off for the Wolfpack, who fall to 0-2 with the loss.
Pepperdine returns home for its next contest, hosting No. 14 Wisconsin for another non-conference matchup. Game time versus the Badgers will be at 3 p.m. with all the action broadcast live at WaveCasts on TheW.tv.
