MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 12 Pepperdine women's soccer team picked up a 3-1 win over Loyola Marymount at home in a Wells Fargo PCH Cup battle on Sunday afternoon.

The Waves put two goals on the board in the first half and then added a third early in the second to secure the conference victory and move to 14-2-3 overall and 5-1-2 WCC.

"That's a much improved LMU team, so picking up a 3-1 win is a good result," said head coach Tim Ward. "We would have liked to get a shutout, but I still thought we did a good job defensively today and scored some really nice goals."

Pepperdine was awarded a penalty shot in the 34th minute after the Lions committed a hand-ball in the box on a shot by Colby Carson (Morgan Hill, Calif./Valley Christian HS). Lynn Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) took the shot for the Waves, burying her 12th goal of the season into the back of the net to put Pepperdine up 1-0.

It was just under two minutes later when Carson struck again, this time putting home her second score this season when she banged home a rebound off a Williams shot. Williams hit a laser strike from the top of the box that LMU keeper Sophia Leksan was just able to make a diving save on, but the ball ricocheted right to Carson who was running up the left side to put away the rebound.

The Waves outshot the Lions 12-7 in the first half and picked up where they left off in the second when Kristine Hilliard (North Ogden, Utah/Weber HS) scored her first goal of the year on a strike from outside the top of the box that found the upper right corner of the goal. Williams picked up her second assist of the game on the play when she played the ball back out of the box to set up Hilliard for the long strike.

Williams finished the game with four points, bringing her season total to 30. The Waves' senior forward is third in the WCC in both categories.

LMU got a goal back in the 78th minute, scoring on a long shot from outside the box by Katherine Henshall that found its way under the crossbar and just out of reach for Pepperdine keeper, Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS).

Seabert finished the game with four saves and Leksan posted seven. The Waves held a 22-14 shot advantage and 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. LMU drops to 9-7-2 overall, 2-5-1 WCC with the loss.

The Waves will be back in action on Saturday when they host No. 15 BYU for their regular-season finale at 1 p.m. Pepperdine will be looking to catch Santa Clara for second place in the conference standings with a win over BYU and a loss or tie by Santa Clara against Saint Mary's.
