Pepperdine and Saint Mary's Box Score (May 7, 2010)
MORAGA, Calif. - Junior starter Matt Bywater (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) threw a complete game five-hitter and the Waves pounded out 17 hits in a 7-1 victory over Saint Mary's in West Coast Conference play on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
Bywater (4-5) pitched his fourth complete game of the season as he limited the Gaels to only one earned run while walking only two batters and striking out six. He snapped a personal two game losing streak and won his first game since April 9. In the process, Bywater lowered his team-leading ERA to 2.30.
Pepperdine (15-24, 4-6) scored singles runs in the second, third, fifth, sixth and ninth innings and added two in the fourth inning to complete the scoring. Sophomore catcher Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) and junior designated hitter Floyd Given (Rohnert Park, Calif./Sacramento C.C.) each went 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBI. Given scored three runs on the day and Johnson scored two of his own.
Saint Mary's (15-23, 6-7) was led by third baseman Patrick Wisdom who smashed his ninth home run of the year and went 2 for 4 from the plate. The Gaels' Mark Anderson (4-4) pitched eight innings allowing six earned runs on 16 hits while striking out five Waves and walking none.
On a beautiful sunny day on the Saint Mary's campus, Pepperdine found timely hitting throughout the contest. The Waves scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning as Given connected on his third home run of the year.
After scoring again in the third inning, the Waves struck for two more in the fourth to open up a commanding 4-0 lead. Johnson led off with a single down the right field line and Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) followed with a double that put runners on second and third. Given promptly banged out a single to left field scoring Johnson and advancing Sever to third. After Sever was tagged out on a fielder's choice, the Waves scored their second run of the inning when freshman Zachary Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) put down a nice sacrifice bunt that scored Given.
Saint Mary's scored their lone run of the game off the hot pitching of Bywater when Wisdom went deep over the right field fence in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
The Waves responded with runs in the fifth and sixth inning and again in the ninth when Johnson connected on his team-leading sixth home run of the year to give the Waves an insurmountable 7-1 lead. His 2 RBI on the day now gives him a team-leading 28 RBI for the season.
Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) also had three hits in the game while teammates Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS), Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) and Sever added two hits apiece to pace the 17 hit Wave attack.
The three-game series continues tomorrow with Pepperdine's Cole Cook (2-5, 3.18) facing Saint Mary's Kyle Barraclough (5-3, 4.59) at 1 p.m. Pepperdine has now won 18 of the last 19 contests vs. Saint Mary's since Steve Rodriguez became head coach in 2004.
