In its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, the Pepperdine women's soccer team opened NCAA Championships play with a 1-0 win over Mississippi in a first-round match Friday night at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex in Nashville, Tenn. Junior forward Lindsey Redlin scored the lone goal of the match to lift the Waves to victory and advance Pepperdine to the second round.
Pepperdine (14-3-3) will face Samford (15-3-4) on Sunday at noon (PST) in a second-round match. The Bulldogs advanced after topping the host Commodores 5-4 in penalty kicks. The two teams were tied 1-1 after 120 minutes of play.
The match opened with Pepperdine and Ole Miss (14-5-2) playing the ball back and forth as both teams tried to create space to make offensive plays. The Waves increased momentum after senior forwards Megan Woods and Daniella Bosio attacked in Rebel territory and were able to take shots challenging their opponents in the box.
After Mississippi turned the ball over to the Waves, Woods dribbled down the left side of the field where she found Redlin in the center. With no Rebel defenders in sight, Redlin controlled the pass and drilled the ball under Ole Miss goalie Megan Vickery to put the Waves on top 1-0 at the 38:08 mark.
Pepperdine continued to pressure Mississippi in the final minutes to maintain the one-goal lead at half time.
As the Rebels attempted to answer with an equalizing goal, Pepperdine defenders Ashley Copp, Courtney Nelson, Jennifer Brewer, and Lauren Treinen along with senior goalkeeper Anna Picarelli prevented the Rebels from scoring as Ole Miss took shot after shot.
With 10 minutes left to play, Redlin stormed down the field where she was fouled directly outside the box, which left Ole Miss down one player after a red card was given. The Waves continued to battle the Rebels as the end of the second period neared and with the effort of every player on the field, Pepperdine secured the win and moved to the second round.
Picarelli registered her seventh shutout of the season and had four saves in the match. The Waves recorded 13 shots, including six shots on goal. Redlin and Bosio led for the Waves with four shots each in the game.
"I'm so proud of the girls; they really deserved this win," head coach Tim Ward said. "It's really great for our team and our conference that we can come all the way out here and pick up the win. We created a lot of scoring opportunities and we're looking forward to the game on Sunday."
Forward Megan Woods and goalkeeper Anna Picarelli were excited to be back at the NCAA tournament. "We train for this all year and we're just so excited to be here and show teams what we can do. We're ready to keep the ball rolling."
