Women’s Soccer Suffers First Loss at Baylor

WACO, Texas. – RV Pepperdine women's soccer (2-1-2) dropped the first match of the season at RV Baylor (4-1), who received votes in this week's top 25 poll, 1-3 Sunday night.
In a fast-paced match, both teams were off to the races as soon as the whistle blew. Less than two minutes after kickoff, the Bears struck first for an early advantage.
With chaos on both ends of the field, the Waves were quick to respond and after a shot from Kyra Murphy was blocked, Julia Quinonez put the ricocheted ball into the back of the net in the sixth minute to level the playing field 1-1.
Outside of the opening six minutes, neither team was able to score for the remainder of the half. Despite momentum swinging heavily both ways, the tie remained as the Waves continued to disrupt the relentless Baylor offense.
After a video assisted review at the hydration break in the second half, an original no-call play in live action was deemed a red card on Emjae Soriano. With just under 25 minutes left in the match, Pepperdine was down to 10 players.
Baylor broke the tie once given the numerical advantage, tacking on goals in the 71st and 86th minute to win the match 3-1. For the second year in a row, Pepperdine suffers the first loss of the season to a Big 12 team.
Quinonez scored her fourth of the year this afternoon, just the second Pepperdine goal to take place in the first half so far this season. It is also the first time this season the Waves have allowed more than one goal by the opposition.
Seeing more chances on set pieces, Pepperdine had six corners compared to Baylor's one as each side logged four shots on goal.
The Waves return to California this week, playing at No. 17 UCLA Friday night at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required) and live stats can be found at www.pepperdinewaves.com.
