Baseball Drops First Game of Series Against San Francisco

"Unfortunate outcome today, but we will bounce back and get them tomorrow," said Head Coach Tyler LaTorre. "Casey Euper gave us another quality start with his six strong innings. He battled well, but his pitch count climbed, and I give credit to USF hitters for extending innings and fouling off a lot of pitches."
Euper indeed tossed another quality start, his fifth in a row. Number 33 entered the contest with a 2.91 ERA for the season and left the game with the same stat after surrendering two runs - both earned - while striking out four Dons.
It was Pepperdine that jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, as Max Aude shot a fastball down the left field line that plated James Dell'Amico. A few batters later, Aude moved to third on a fielder's choice before being brought home on a sac fly from Daniel Patterson to make it 2-0 Waves after two innings.
The Dons answered with a pair of runs in the fourth. San Francisco started spraying a string of hits against Euper, and Eddison Esquivel's RBI double pulled San Fran within a run at 2-1. Tyler Harries ripped a 3-1 pitch to left, scoring Esquivel to tie the game at two apiece. Euper got out of the frame with a lineout by Jayden Garrison and a groundout by Myles Kallinger.
San Francisco added three more in the top of the seventh on a three-run shot by Nystrom off Dylan Stewart, who had come in relief of Euper to start the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Pepperdine responded with a pair to pull within one run at 5-4. With two outs, a runner on, and Joshua Woodworth at the plate, LaTorre called time for a quick chat with the freshman and Trey Dunn, who was on deck. Whatever was said worked like magic, as Woodworth saw a first-pitch fastball and scalded a no-doubt blast to left-center for his ninth homer of the year, which is now tied with Patterson and Trey for the most on the team.
Unfortunately for the Waves, that's where the buck would stop. Pepperdine still trailed 5-4 going to the ninth but San Fran put up a crooked number with five runs in the top half of the inning, blowing the game open and eventually leading to a 10-4 loss for the Waves.First pitch CRUSHING‼️ @15jwood goes yard to pull us within one!

"We had our chances to score more, but couldn't take advantage of those opportunities and USF pitchers made pitches when they needed to," continued LaTorre. "I was really proud of how we responded in the 7th after the three-spot USF put up. Finley Buckner led the inning off with a pinch hit double and then Josh Woodworth got all of his home run to left. We just couldn't hold that deficit to one run to allow for a comeback. We've been in this position before and we will come ready to go tomorrow to even the series."
GAME NOTES
- Dell'Amico went 3-for-4, marking his 11th multi-hit game of the season.
- Pepperdine pitching walked four batters, while San Francisco's staff allowed just one free pass.
- The Dons left nine on base while the Waves stranded eight.
