The orange and blue's match against the Spartans was an enthralling back-and-forth affair. Three of the five points had to be decided in three sets.
SJSU earned the first victory after Gabbie Perez and Maddy Snow were defeated in two, 21-19 and 21-11. The Waves responded, courtesy of Emi Erickson and Ginvera Merlini. The reigning West Coast Conference Pair of the Week took their first set 21-19, but the Spartans responded 21-13. The Malibu duo took the tie-breaker 15 to 11.Â
Emma Eden and Michaela Cyrani then gave Pepperdine a 2-1 lead after winning in straight sets, 21-9 and 21-15. The opposition tied it back up with a fifth flight win. Deanie Woodruff alongside Evie Doezema were defeated in three. The Spartans started out 21-19, but Pepperdine flipped the script with a 21-19 win of their own in the second. After forcing a third, the Waves ultimately lost, 15-9. Today's match marked just the fourth appearance of Doezema this season, but third alongside a returning Woodruff.Â
With the overall score stuck in a 2-2 stalemate, the stage was set for flight three to decide which team would emerge victorious. The task lay upon the shoulders of freshmen Mancuso and Jagielska, who had already prevented their team from being shut-out in the morning. Their first set was a seemingly never-ending rally in which they came out on top, 29-27. The Spartans upped the ante with a 21-18 response. Not only the point—but also the game would be decided in a nail-biting tie-breaker. The Waves raced out to a lead, which despite minor hiccups they would not relinquish. Victory was secured for the Waves via a 15-8 scoreline in the third.Â
This afternoon's match marked the first time the Waves have been on the winning side of a 3-2 score this season, something Coach Sicoli had emphasized prior to the invitational.
