No. 6 Men’s Volleyball Takes First of Two Against UC Merced

MALIBU, Calif. –  The No.6 Pepperdine men's volleyball team (14-4, 5-0 MPSF) swept UC Merced (3-12, 0-7 MPSF) in the first of two matches against the Bobcats Friday night in Firestone Fieldhouse.
 
"It was great to get Matt and Grant going out there tonight," head coach Jonathan Winder said. "The guys did a good job to stay consistent as the match went and as we changed roles a bit throughout. Excited to honor our great seniors tomorrow night and compete again as a group here in Firestone."
 
For the second match in a row, Matt Mazur was one of the top Waves in kills, leading the night with 11. With just a total of one lead change throughout the three sets, it was all Pepperdine from the first serve. Joze Gomez led the squad through the opening set with four of the team's 10 kills. Although the team hit the lowest percentage of the night at .238, the Bobcats could not climb out of the negative, hitting -.188 as Pepperdine took the first set 25-15.
 
Hitting a monster .800 in the second, Pepperdine recorded just one error in 15 total attempts. Mazur had a team-high five kills down the stretch as Gomez and Grant Lamoureux both recorded an ace to help carry the Waves to a 25-12 set two victory.
 
The third and final set of the night had an identical score to the second. With a match-high 14 kills, Pepperdine was led by Mazur with six, followed closely by Lamoureux who had four. Ryan Graves recorded 11 of the 13 total assists before Aidan Tune came in to close the match behind the service line. Vinny Coello saw action in just his second set of the year, recording his first kill of his collegiate career as Pepperdine stretched the lead to end the night.
 
Winning in three straight sets, the Waves are back in Firestone tomorrow for the second and final match of the weekend against UC Merced. First serve tomorrow against the Bobcats is scheduled for 4 p.m. with senior day festivities taking place briefly beforehand. GAME NOTES
Matt Mazur had a night-high 11 kills.
Grant Lamoureux led the Waves in service aces with two as the team had a combined six.
• Mazur also led in accuracy tonight, hitting .692 on 13 attempts.
• With six total blocks on the night, Eadie had a hand in a team-high three. .
Jacob Reilly had a team-high 10 receptions without an error.
Andrej Polomac accounted for a team-high 16 assists, followed closely by Ryan Graves who had 13.
• The Waves outhit the Bobcats .419 to -.036.
• Pepperdine held UC Merced to the lowest hitting percentage of any opponent this season.
