WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — No. 15 Pepperdine men's golf claimed the team victory following Wednesday's final round at the Southwestern Invitational from North Ranch Country Club.
The Waves finished 11-under par and 17 strokes ahead of runner-up San Diego State for the tournament. The Aztecs' Harry Takis took home the individual title at 7-under par.
Individually, three Waves landed in the top-six, led by
Brady Siravo who earned second place with a 5-under par total for the tournament.
Willy Walsh finished fourth at 2-under while
Byungho Lee tabbed sixth-place at 1-under par.
All five Waves secured top-20 finishes, as
Mahanth Chirravuri posted an 11th-place finish at 1-over while
Luke Dariotis claimed 17th with a +4 showing.
"This was a really good start to our spring season with a win at our home event," noted head coach
Michael Beard. "North Ranch Country Club was a true test the last three days. Our guys stayed disciplined and managed the greens pretty well. All five guys finished in the top-20 individually which we haven't done this year. Our depth hasn't been our strength but it was this week. It was great to have so much support from the membership at North Ranch as well as our Pepperdine staff members. Our players felt it for sure."
Wednesday's final round saw the highest scores of the week by a margin over 1.5 strokes, with an average score of 74.85 after Tuesday's round saw 72.72, with the opening round at 73.27.
Playing in the final group, Siravo was in contention for the individual title through the 54th hole, which Takis entered with a one stroke lead and topped Siravo's par with a birdie to secure the win. Steady throughout his final round, Siravo followed up a 2-over 36 on the front nine with seven straight pars to start the back. He carded a birdie on 17 to put himself within one stroke of the lead heading into the final hole, eventually getting up and down to make par. His 1-over 71 brought his final score to 5-under for the tournament.
Walsh also posted a 1-over 71 to close out his week, battling back from making seven on the par-three third after a birdie on two. He made the turn following a 4-over 38 on the front nine, shooting three under on the back. Walsh carded his second eagle of the week on the 12th, before a birdie on 16 brought his final score to 2-under for the tournament, claiming fourth-place individually.
Lee maintained his spot in the top-ten with a 4-over 74 in the final round, eventually placing sixth individually. He got in at 1-over on the front nine with one bogey and eight pars, before going birdie-bogey-birdie to start the back nine. He went on to shoot 4-over on the final five holes, but recorded his second career top-10 collegiate finish.
Chirravuri posted the third-lowest round in the field at even par for the day. After nine pars on the front nine, he got it going with birdies on 10 and 12 to move to 2-under for the day. His lone blemish came on 16, registering a double bogey to bring his round back to even. Chirravuri finished in 11th-place individually at one over par, with a consistent 70-71-70 tournament.
Dariotis posted the first top-20 finish of his career in his third collegiate tournament, finishing at 4-over following a 3-over 73 in Wednesday's final round. He made the turn following a 1-over 35 on the front nine with three bogeys and two birdies. After beginning the back nine with a birdie to get back to even par, he eventually got in with the 73, contributing to Pepperdine's team score for the second time on the week.
On the individual side,
Oscar Bach matched Chirravuri in third-place on the day amongst the field with an even par 70. Bach finished the tournament in 32nd at 9-over in his first collegiate event.
Luke Bailey finished in 36th with a 10-over mark for the tournament, posting a 3-over 73 in the final round.
Carson Kim finished with a 70-76-76 week to post 42nd-place at 12-over.
Joshua Koo recorded a 75-86-80 tournament to finish 31-over.
Pepperdine's 5-over team score on Wednesday was second amongst all teams, as UNLV's 1-under marked the lone round of the tournament in which a team bested the Waves.
The win marked Pepperdine's third-ever team victory at the Southwestern Invitational, as the Waves also took home the team title in 2017 and 2020.
