DALY CITY, Calif. - No. 10 Pepperdine men's golf ended The Desimone Invitational on a good note Tuesday afternoon behind solid outings from
Willy Walsh and
Mahanth Chirravuri.
The Waves finished 8th out of 15 as a team but in a very competitive tournament, Pepperdine was just four strokes back from finishing in second. No. 9 Arizona ran away with the victory, shooting 39-under as a squad, 20 strokes better than second-place finisher No. 39 TCU (-19). SMU's Ben Steinmann and Arizona State's Pongsapak Laopakdee tied for the individual win, firing 13-under.
Walsh was nearly unstoppable all day, sinking three birdies on the front nine before going on a heater and firing three in a row on holes 13 through 15. He ran into a brief bump on 16 and 17 where he bogeyed, but finished strong on 18 with another birdie. He shot five-under in round three and 10-under for the tournament, placing him third overall.
"It was nice to see Willy have a very great tournament up in the Bay Area near his home," said
Michael Beard. "He's hit the ball really well at our last 2 events. From a team perspective we have some work to do before the Valspar. We aren't far off but this week we needed to be better off the tee and with our wedges."
Chirravuri was troubled by bogeys on holes five, eight, and 11, but recovered to brush in birdies on 12 and 14 to position himself for a 13th-place finish.
Senior
Brady Siravo shot one-over in round three and dazzled with an eagle on hole 14 and completed the day with a birdie on 18. He finished the tournament three-under, good for 20th place overall.
Luke Bailey tallied a trio of birdies on Tuesday, with two on the front nine. He fired one-over in the afternoon and three-over for the Invitational, staying in the top 50.
Byungho Lee rounded out the Waves' lineup, also shooting one-over in the third round and completing the tournament six-over par.
Carson Kim was competing individually and finished in 60th place overall after shooting six-over in round three and five-over for the tournament.
