Men's Golf By Athletic Communications

Pepperdine Through Day One in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, Calif. – The Pepperdine men's golf team is tied for 14th after the first day of the NCAA Championships.

The 21st-ranked Waves posted a 5-over 293 on the par-72 7,480-yard Omni La Costa Resort & Spa North Course and are currently tied for the last two spots in the top-15.
With the top-15 teams advancing to a fourth round of stroke play after Sunday's third round, Pepperdine sits just inside the first cut line after 18 holes.

Additionally, the top-8 teams will qualify for match play after the fourth round of stroke play, and the Waves are just four strokes behind that current mark. #6 Oklahoma currently holds a five stroke lead at 8-under (280).

Individually, Pepperdine was led by Mahanth Chirravuri who is tied for 25th after posting a 1-under 71 with three birdies. He was one of 38 individuals in the 156-player field to shoot under par in the opening round of the NCAA Championships. Heading into the second round, Phichaksn Maichon of Texas A&M holds the individual lead at 6-under (66).

  • Junior Mahanth Chirravuri (Chandler, Ariz.) is tied for 25th at 1-under after tabbing a 71 with three birdies today. Chirravuri collected birdies on holes 2, 11 and 18, while playing his last 10 holes 2-under. 
  • Junior Brady Siravo (Sacramento, Calif.) is tied for 57th after carding a 1-over 73 on Friday. Siravo notched birdies on holes 6 and 16 during his opening round.
  • Sophomore Willy Walsh (San Mateo, Calif.) notched a 74 with birdies on holes 6 and 11 in the first round. Walsh was 2-over at the turn, but was able to play his last nine holes even-par to finish at 2-over and is tied for 63rd after 18 holes.
  • Freshman Luke Bailey (Encinitas, Calif.) started his tournament with a 3-over 75. He earned birdies on holes 9, 11 and 16 as he heads into the second round tied for 79th.
  • Sophomore Kris Kuvaas (Houston, Texas) is tied for 147th after shooting a 9-over 81 during Friday's round. He birdied hole 15 today.
