AMHERST, Va. – After play was cut short due to darkness, the Pepperdine men's golf team is in fifth place after the first day of the NCAA Amherst Regional.
The 19th-ranked Waves were able to finish all 18 holes on the shortened first day, posting an even 280 on the par-70 7,212-yard Poplar Grove Golf Club.
With the top-five teams from the regional advancing to the NCAA Championship, Pepperdine sits just inside the cut line after its first 18 holes. The Waves are nine strokes behind #30 Tennessee who leads the tournament at 9-under, and they're two strokes ahead of Florida Gulf Coast who is in 6th at 2-over.
Individually, Pepperdine was led by
Luke Bailey and
Willy Walsh who are
tied for 6th after both posting 2-under 68s.
PLAYER SCORES
- Freshman Luke Bailey (Encinitas, Calif.) started his round with back-to-back birdies and made the turn at 2-under. From there, Bailey played an even back nine to finish with a 2-under 68 and is tied for 6th after 18 holes. He collected a total of four birdies on Sunday.
- Sophomore Willy Walsh (San Mateo, Calif.) is also tied for 6th at 2-under, notching a 68 with four birdies in the first round. Walsh was even after nine, but collected three birdies during his 2-under back nine.
- Junior Mahanth Chirravuri (Chandler, Ariz.) is tied for 31st at 1-over after tabbing a 71 with one eagle and three birdies today. Chirravuri eagled hole 11 and collected birdies on holes 5, 8 and 18 during the first round.
- Junior Brady Siravo (Sacramento, Calif.) is tied for 54th after carding a 3-over 73 on Sunday. Siravo earned birdies on holes 3, 7, 13 and 14 during his opening round.
- Sophomore Kris Kuvaas (Houston, Texas) is in 75th after shooting a 15-over 85 in the first round.
