Track Travels to Fullerton for a Pair of Meets

MALIBU, Calif. — After setting three more school records at the Gaucho Relays last weekend, the Pepperdine track team will compete at two meets hosted at Cal State Fullerton this weekend.

Pepperdine's distance runners will compete in the Astro Ai Distance Classic on Friday, March 7 before the rest of the squad race at the Ben Brown Invitational on Saturday. The meet will not be livestreamed, but a live result link can be found on the track team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.

Head coach Lauren Floris and company will look to keep the Waves' streak of broken school records intact this weekend. At UCSB's Gaucho Relays last weekend, the women's 4x800-meter and sprint medley relay teams broke longstanding school records, while freshman Brittany Rivas broke the 400-meter hurdles school record in her collegiate debut. All told, the Waves have set 14 school records in Floris'  fourth year at the helm of her alma mater.

Friday's distance events start at 5 p.m. with the 1,500-meter run. Kaleb McElfish will lead three men in the event, while indoor mile record holder Hannah Bruner gets her first crack at that event's outdoor equivalent in the women's race. Bruner's freshman-year time of 4:42.00 is the sixth-fastest in program history.

Running under the lights, the 5,000 meters is the event of choice for the men's distance squad. Sophomore Gordy Nilsen, who broke the program's outdoor 3,000-meter run record earlier this year, will make his season debut in the 5K alongside Patrick Thomas and Dominic Silhol, who rank sixth and eighth, respectively, in program history for the event. Freshman Elijah Gentry will make his individual outdoor debut in the event too; he put together a promising debut season in cross country earlier this year.

The women's 5,000-meter run record might be on borrowed time, too. Sophomore Lizzy Crawford — who broke the indoor 3K and 5K record earlier this spring — is slated to make her season debut in the event. Crawford's indoor time of 17:14.16 would rank third on Pepperdine's outdoor top-10 list.

Rounding out the distance events, the women's 800 meters features Pepperdine's indoor school record holder, Caroline Graham, making her outdoor debut. She ran a 2:17.25 indoors to break the school record this past January; her personal best time of 2:13.91 from a year ago is less than two seconds off Olivia Miller's school record of 2:12.11. On the men's side, Ryan Fabian will lead a group of six Waves.

Saturday's Ben Brown Invitational kicks off with the women's 4x100-meter relay at 12:10 p.m. Pepperdine's relay team of Ava Maly, Isabella Reyes, Tatiana Potter and Kaley Peterson will make their outdoor debut in search of breaking the school record of 47.60 that has stood since 2017. Peterson and Maly all slated to double in the 100- and 200-meter dashes later in the meet, while Reyes and 4x400-meter relay teammate Lexi Thomas lead the Waves in the 400-meter dash.

Elsewhere in the entries list, Rivas will look to lower her school record in the 400-meter hurdles. Her heat will go off at 3:20 p.m.

Pepperdine will field men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams to conclude the Ben Brown Invitational. The Waves' relay team of Lexi Thomas, Maddy Ortman, Brittany Rivas and Isabella Reyes will aim to break the outdoor 4x400-meter relay record after breaking the indoor record at the MPSF Championships less than a month ago.
