Walsh in Second After One Round in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – After an impressive 2-under 70, Willy Walsh is tied for second on the individual leaderboard after the first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate. Earning his 12th under par round of the season, Walsh was one of only five players in the 84-player field to card a round under par today.

As a team, Pepperdine is tied for third after posting a 7-over 295 at the 7,510-yard par-72 Southern Highlands Golf Club. After 18 holes, the 24th-ranked Waves are in front of seven teams that are currently ranked ahead of them in the most recent rankings: #4 Oklahoma, #9 Virginia, #11 Florida, #12 Illinois, #16 Georgia Tech, #18 SMU, #22 San Diego State.

#2 Auburn is leading the tournament after a 1-under 287, while #31 UNLV is in second at 2-over (290).

PLAYER SCORES
  • Sophomore Willy Walsh (San Mateo, Calif.) is tied for 2nd after 18 holes of play. Starting on the back nine, Walsh was 2-over through his first eight holes, but was able to find a groove over his last 10. After a bumpy start, he settled in and collected three birdies in addition to an eagle on the 620-yard par-5 3rd hole to finish with a 2-under 70. Walsh was one of only five players in the entire field to shoot under par on Sunday.
  • Freshman Byungho Lee (Seoul, South Korea) carded a 1-over 73 with three birdies in the first round. Lee is tied for 11th heading into Monday's second round.
  • Junior Mahanth Chirravuri (Chandler, Ariz.) is tied for 22nd after posting a 3-over 75 today. Chirravuri notched two birdies during his opening round.
  • Sophomore Kris Kuvaas (Houston, Texas) tallied a 5-over 77 with one birdie. Kuvaas is tied for 41st after 18 holes.
  • Junior Brady Siravo (Sacramento, Calif.) is tied for 59th after recording a 7-over 79 with three birdies in the opening round.
  • Playing as an individual, freshman Luke Bailey (Encinitas, Calif.) posted a 4-over 76 with four birdies and is tied for 30th heading into the second round.
