Pepperdine's Dominant Hitting Stalls Dominican NY

MALIBU, Calif. – In a three-set match, Pepperdine was able to sweep Dominican New York this afternoon, posting 25-17, 25-11, and 25-14 set scores. 
As a team, Pepperdine hit their third-best percentage in program history, with a .660. Jose Gomez earned himself a spot in the Pepperdine record books, tying for fifth all-time with a .833 hitting percentage this afternoon, posting 10 kills, an ace, and a block. Ethan Watson swung a perfect seven-for-seven while attacking, also adding two blocks and a dig, while Matt Mazur tabbed eight kills on a .727 success rate, two aces, and two blocks.   
Pepperdine held a Dig Pink match today, supporting the Sideout Foundation and all of those in their battles with cancer. Each athlete from both teams honored someone who battled the disease before the start of the match, also wearing pink to support the fight against cancer.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Throughout the first set, Pepperdine had a dominant start, with only two ties throughout the entire set. Jose Gomez led the attack with four kills on six attempts while three other Waves tabbed two kills apiece. Collectively, Pepperdine hit a dominant .647, keeping Dominican to only a .080 hitting percentage, while also posting two denials at the net. The Waves' 12 kills led them to take set one, 25-17. 
During set two, Pepperdine continued its dominant attacking, with 10 kills as opposed to Dominican's five, also keeping the Chargers to a -.211 success rate. The Waves served four aces, two coming from Matt Mazur, who also tabbed a team-high four kills throughout the set. Pepperdine posted 10 kills on a .533 clip, allowing them to take set two, 25-11. 
In set three, Ryan Barnett took control of the offense, posting six kills on eight attempts, while Ethan Watson and Gomez each scored four apiece as well. Watson had an errorless night, swinging a perfect four-for-four in set three, allowing the Waves to post a collective .762 percentage. Pepperdine kept Dominican to just a .136 hitting percentage, also only being blocked a singular time throughout the entire match. Pepperdine took set three, 25-14, and was able to sweep Dominican, 3-0. 
 
UP NEXT
The Waves will head north to Santa Barbara on Feb. 14 to play in their first regular season road match against #15 UC Santa Barbara before hosting a match with the Gauchos on Feb. 15 in Malibu.
