Freshmen Lead the Way on Day One of Rodionoff Invite

MALIBU, Calif. – After one day of competition, the Pepperdine Swim and Dive team currently sits atop the standings of the Rodionoff Invite. The Waves return to Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool this morning at 10 a.m. to conclude their inaugural meet of the season.

"The Waves had a statement start for the invite" said Head Coach Ellie Monobe. "Jackie setting the stage for all with a school record and zones cut was by far the highlight of the day. We are excited to get back on the boards and have swim hold down the depth in the coming lineup."

DIVE RECAP

Freshman Jackie Johnson began her Pepperdine career with a performance to remember. In her first event as a Wave, she broke the school's 3-meter diving record en route to a first-place finish. The Nebraska native posted an impressive score of 289.90. Amanda Wong, the previous record-holder, took third in the event with a score of 234.60. Between them for the silver was Delainey Pisaruk (250.50).

With Johnson's historic score she has qualified for the NCAA Diving Zones in Flagstaff, Ariz.

SWIM RECAP

The blue and orange swam to four first-place finishes for the day. In a display of the Wave's youth movement, freshman Sophia Blietz was responsible for half. Her times in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.65) and 200-yard butterfly (2:08.83) were good for gold. Blietz's 200-yard backstroke time places her eighth all-time in the Pepperdine record book.

A Wave was also the fastest in the 200-yard IM. Ava Taylor swam to a time of 2:11.03 to lead the pack. Paige Easton came in right behind her to take second (2:11.06).

Charli Sunahara earned first in the 100-yard breast (1:06.59), and was also a top finisher in the 200-yard IM where she placed third (2:11.77).

Emma Guglielmello paced the Waves in the 1000-yard freestyle. Her time of 10:32.17 placed her second in the standings.

After 18 events, Pepperdine leads second place Utah Tech by 177 points to 157.
