Pepperdine Falls in WCC Title Match

BREMERTON, Wash. – After ending stroke play with a WCC individual for sophomore Brady Siravo yesterday, the Pepperdine men's golf team entered match play to compete for the WCC team title today at Gold Mountain Golf Club.  The Waves defeated PCH Cup rival LMU 3-1 in the semifinal to face San Diego for the final bout, but were felled 3-1.

Siravo continued playing well on the course through both matches today, going 2-0 on the day, while Mahanth Chirravuri and Kristoffer Kuvaas each tabbed a win.  Kuvaas remained undefeated as his second match went unfinished.

The Waves started the day in a semifinal matchup against the Lions.  Though the two squads traded leads throughout the match, Pepperdine started to gain traction on the back.  #56 Chirravuri got off to a hot start, however, and after making the turn with a four-point lead he continued on to a 6&5 win over #57 Riley Lewis.  Siravo was tied at the turn with Trevor Algya and trailed by one with five holes left.  He tied things up on hole five and used the momentum to carry towards a 1UP victory.  LMU then got on the board to make it 2-1.

Kuvaas trailed to open his match against Alejandro Alonso, but tied the score and then pulled ahead on holes four and five.  He led by three at the turn and carried that trend en route to a 5&3 win to complete the 3-1 team victory and send the Waves to the final against the Toreros.

The final would tell a different tale, though, as San Diego had the edge early on.  Siravo would take first crack at the opposition, facing off against Kelvin Si.  He trailed by one out of the turn, but tied the score up on hole 12.  A birdie on 13 would put him ahead and he would use that gain to pull ahead for the 2&1 win.  It would be the only point Pepperdine would tack in the match as San Diego won the following three pairings for a 3-1 end.

Pepperdine will find out its fate for the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday, May 1 at 11 a.m. PT.  The NCAA selection show will air live on GOLF Channel.
