SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Pepperdine beach volleyball program took second place in the West Coast Challenge this weekend.

The Waves (12-10) swept Saint Mary's (11-11) 4-1 in the semifinal game before falling to Loyola Marymount (17-8) in the championship match.

MATCH RECAPS
In the first dual, Pepperdine jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of two-set victories as Emi Erickson (Honolulu, Hawai'i) and Maya McNabney (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada) took court five, 21-13, 21-10 and Gracie Pedersen (Franklin, Tenn.) and Kaydon Meyers (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won court four 22-10, 21-16.

Kate Clermont (Burlington, Ontario, Canada) and McKenna Thomas (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) would be the pair to clinch the dual for the Waves as they earned a two-set victory on court one, 21-11, 21-14.

After dropping the first set 17-21 in slot No. 2, Kristine Briede (Balozi, Latvia) and Madison Oriskovich (Santa Barbara, Calif.) battled back and won the court after taking the last two sets 21-14, 15-5.

In slot No. 3, Gabriella Perez (Loomis, Calif.) and Sarlota Svobodova (Brno, Czech Republic) also dropped their first set 18-21, but were able to come back and complete the sweep as they took sets two and three 21-13, 15-11.

In the second dual, Loyola Marymount quickly took a 2-0 lead with a couple victories on courts five and one, 21-10, 21-12 and 21-8, 21-15 respectively.

Madison Oriskovich (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Kristine Briede (Balozi, Latvia) would cut the Lions advantage in half, 2-1 as they defeated the LMU duo 21-16, 21-17 in slot No. 2.

The Lions would clinch the dual after winning slot No. 3 in two sets, 21-19, 21-19. LMU would then make the final score 4-1 after taking court four 21-17, 21-17.

NEXT UP
Next weekend, the Waves return to Malibu as they host the Waves Tourney on April 5-6. Pepperdine will take on Southeastern Louisiana and Cal State Bakersfield on Friday before facing off against UC Davis on Saturday.
