MPSF Indoor Track Championships Await the Waves Track Team
2/23/2024 3:13:00 PM | Track
MALIBU, Calif. — For the second time in program history, the Pepperdine indoor track team will toe the line at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at The Podium in Spokane, Wash, from Feb. 25-26.
Pepperdine's track action on Sunday begins with Maddy Ortman's preliminary heat of the 60-meter hurdles at 3 p.m. The 60-meter hurdle final will be the first track event on Monday at 9 a.m. Both days of the meet will be livestreamed via FloTrack, albeit behind a paywall. Relevant live stat and livestream links can be found on the Pepperdine track team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
Only the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles will have prelims and finals. All other events will only be a final round.
This season, the Waves look to improve on last year's 11th-place finish at MPSFs. However, the conference has changed, most notably with the departure of 2023 champion BYU and the addition of fellow West Coast Conference member Saint Mary's. At this meet last year, Kaley Peterson set the indoor 200-meter dash record, while alumna Olivia Miller broke the indoor mile record.
ÂFROM THE HEAT SHEET
-
Six Waves will try making the finals in the 60-meter dash: Kaley Peterson, Mia Skuraton, Isabella Reyes, Ava Maly, Lexi Dellevigne and Alexa Ortega. Peterson has the fastest time of the bunch with a 7.82-second time she ran at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Feb. 2. Prelims are scheduled for 3:20 p.m. on Sunday.
-
The same six sprinters plus Ortman will compete in the 200-meter dash on Sunday at 4:50 p.m. Reyes leads the Waves with her time of 26.32 seconds — good for fourth all-time in program history — which she ran in Albuquerque earlier this month.Â
-
The distance medley relay caps off the track action on Sunday, as Pepperdine's quartet of Caroline Graham, Avery Smith, Abby Winter and Elle Shrader will make its season debut.
-
Monday will be a busy day for the distance runners, starting with the mile at 9:50 a.m. Shrader, who clocked the second-fastest mile in school history with a 5:20.02 run at altitude at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, leads Winter, Brooke Bakken and Renee Skiera in the event.
-
Smith is Pepperdine's lone entry in the 400-meter dash, which starts on Monday at 10:20 a.m.
-
Five mid-distance runners are set to run the 800-meter dash: Graham, Ashley Eagan, Caroline Fleenor, Kayla Renner and Hannah Miller. Graham ran the second-fastest time in program history with her 2:22.93 that she clocked at altitude in New Mexico.
-
Eden Mittlesdorf leads a group of four Waves, including Lacey Reedy, Megan LaCamera and Shrader, in the 3,000-meter dash — the longest event for the Waves at MPSFs.
-
The MPSF Indoor Championships wraps up with the 4x400-meter relay at 12:10 p.m. Pepperdine is seeded ninth in the event.
