SPOKANE, Wash. — In a day that saw the Pepperdine women's track team run 11 new top-10 times, the team saved its best performance for last, as Abby Winter, Avery Smith, Caroline Graham and Elle Shrader broke the school distance medley relay record on day one of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday.
The Waves' quartet crossed the finish line with a time of 12:24.86 — nearly 10 seconds faster than the previous record of 12:33.27 set in 2020. This is the second school record broken this season and the first new indoor relay record run in four years.
Going into MPSFs having never run the distance medley relay this season, Winter helped the Waves stay out of trouble during a tight pack in the opening 1,000-meter leg, which saw Portland drop the baton midway through a contested third lap. After Winter clocked a 3:51.44 split, Pepperdine maintained its position from that point forward with Smith's 62-second leg in the 400 meters. Then, the Waves got two stellar runs from Graham's 2:20.93 800-meter split and Shrader's closing mile in 5:09.74 — the latter of which is faster than Pepperdine's indoor mile record. The Waves placed 10th out of 11 teams in the event.
Earlier, the sprint crew started the meet on the right foot. In the first heat of the first event, Maddy Ortman ran a personal-best time of 9.39 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, which was not only a personal best by nearly half a second, but also moved her up to second place in program history.
Then, in the 60-meter dash, Kaley Peterson led Pepperdine in her first of two events by clocking a time of 7.75 seconds — four-hundredths of a second away from breaking Izzy Connell's seven-year-old school record. All told, the Waves ran five new top-10 times in the event: Peterson, Mia Skuraton (7.95 seconds, 5th), Isabella Reyes (7.98 seconds, 7th), Ava Maly (8.05 seconds, 8th) and Lexie Dellevigne (8.09 seconds, 9th).
The sprinters pulled off a similar feat in the 200-meter dash. Peterson led the Waves again with a time of 25.49 — good for 25th out of 41 runners — and four more top-10 times occurred in the event. Running in the same heat as Peterson, Reyes moved up to third all-time by crossing the line in 26.10 seconds, and she was followed by Skuraton (26.60 seconds, 7th), Dellevigne (26.98 seconds, 8th) and Alexa Ortega (27.11 seconds, 10th).
Tomorrow, the first event for the Waves is the mile at 9:50 a.m. PT. The meet will be livestreamed via FloTrack, albeit behind a paywall. Relevant live stat and livestream links can be found on the Pepperdine track team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
