SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — After the first meet of the outdoor season, the Pepperdine men's track team's record book already needs updating as redshirt junior Brendan Fong's school records in the 200- and 400-meter dashes highlighted the Sunshine Indoor Open at Westmont on Saturday.
Less than two hours apart, Fong became the first Wave to go sub-50 in the 400-meter dash with his time of 48.10 seconds. Then Fong capped off his Pepperdine debut by running a 21.49-second time in the 200-meter dash to become the first Wave to go sub-22 seconds in the event. In both races Fong had top-three finishes; he placed second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 200-meters, respectively.
Pepperdine nearly had a third school record in the season-opener, as Johnathan Flint was less than five seconds off Karl Winter's school record in the 3,000-meter run. Flint ran an 8:30.56 — good for fourth place — while freshman Dominic Silhol rounded out the Waves' top-10 finishers in that event with a time of 8:40.54.Â
All told, Pepperdine had ten, top-10 individual finishes across seven events. The Waves' distance medley relay team placed fourth and the 4x800-meter relay team finished in third.
