SERIES HISTORY
Pepperdine has won the last 12 meetings against San Diego; the most recent match was in the 2022 WCC Championships last spring. The Waves have a perfect 19-0 all-time record against the Dons.
SCOUTING THE WAVES
The #8 Pepperdine Waves split a pair of road matches last week: first with a 4-3 loss to UCLA (which was ranked 24th at the time) before rebounding with a 5-2 win at #74 BYU last Saturday. Singles play carried the Waves in both matches, with sophomore Savannah Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) going 2-0 and
earning WCC Singles Player of the Week honors for her efforts.
With the split, Pepperdine experienced some movement in the ITA national rankings. The doubles team of Broadus and Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) held its spot as the nation's top-ranked doubles team despite two losses last week.
Bunyawi Thamchaiwat (Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand) and
Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) checked in at #32 in the doubles rankings, as well. In singles, Tjen was ranked 11th, Broadus was 20th and Zaar remained at #30.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Wednesday's match against San Diego will be a battle between the WCC's final two unbeaten teams. Predictably, the Toreros will be Pepperdine's steepest competition in conference play. USD boasts three nationally-ranked singles players in #63 Kailey Evans, #86 Abigail Desiatnikov and #96 Solymar Colling, plus a top-25 doubles team in Evans and Elizabeth Goldsmith, who ranked 23rd in the latest ITA polls. USD is 3-3 against nationally-ranked teams and is looking to bounce back after losses to #13 Stanford and #47 SMU last week.
San Francisco, meanwhile, is fourth in the conference standings with an 11-7 overall record and a 4-3 mark in conference play. In their lone match of the week last Saturday, the Dons beat Santa Clara 6-1 on senior day. USF's lone appearance in the latest ITA polls came courtesy of doubles team Maria Martinez and Simran Chhabra, who were ranked 87th.
