SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Pepperdine women's tennis sophomore
Anastasiia Grechkina earned an automatic qualification into the NCAA Singles Championships next month, winning the singles title at the ITA Southwest Regionals hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State this week.
Grechkina earned five singles victories on the way to the automatic qualification for the two finalists, defeating Arizona State's No. 52 Emilija Tverijonaite in three sets to secure the bid before eventually claiming the singles crown. She did not drop a single set in the tournament until the semifinal round.
"Anastasiia had a great week at Regionals and it reflects the work that she's put in and the standard that she's held herself to," said head coach
Tassilo Schmid. "As she would say, the roller coaster doesn't stop."
Alexia Harmon earned a pair of victories in the rounds of 64 and 32 as well for the Waves, with Grechkina and Harmon also logging two doubles victories to a quarterfinal berth.
Grechkina improves her singles record to 15-2 this fall, and claims her second singles title after a run to the singles crown at the Battle in the Bay Classic.
The NCAA Singles Championships will take place Nov. 18-23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
