Waves Close Out Cypress Point Classic

MONTEREY, Calif. – The Pepperdine men's golf team closed up the Cypress Point Classic in fourth-place after going head-to-head against #3-seeded Tennessee in a set of six singles matches on Tuesday afternoon, falling 4-1-1.

The #8-seeded Waves highlighted the tournament with an upset over top-seeded Auburn in the foursomes-formatted first round to open the tournament, before falling to #5-seeded Texas in the second round during fourball.  The third and final round today included six separate singles matches.

Mahanth Chirravuri won his singles match against Caleb Surratt, a player that ranks #11 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), 2&1.  He remained undefeated throughout the weekend as he and his partner, Joshua Koo, won both their matches during the first and second rounds as well.  William Walsh closed out his weekend with a tie in the final round, going head-to-head with Jake Hall who ranked #41 in the PGA Tour University rankings.  Walsh finished with a win alongside Brady Siravo in the first round against Auburn also.

PLAYER SCORES
  • Sophomore Mahanth Chirravuri (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton HS/USC) won his match over Caleb Surratt, 2&1.  Though the pair went toe-to-toe through the first three holes, Chirravuri gained huge advantage with three-consecutive points on holes 13, 14 and 15 to pull ahead.  He collected another point on the 18th before the turn, and another point directly after to pull forward by as many as five points throughout the round.  Though the Vols' player tried to counter, Chirravuri held onto the win by two with one hole left to play.
  • Sophomore Joshua Koo (Cerritos, Calif./Cerritos HS/Washington) had a tight battle, but fell 3&1 to Josh Hill.  The opposition collected his first point on hole one, though Koo was able to tie things up on the 12th and go ahead by one on the 13th.  After some back-and-forth, Koo was leading by one at the turn, but Hill tied things up on the first hole and eventually built out a three-point lead by the eighth hole.
  • Sophomore Brady Siravo (Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit HS) took on Bryce Lewis, who ranks #30 on the PGA Tour University rankings and #40 on the WAGR, falling by with a close 2UP result.  After trading points on the back nine, the pair was tied at the turn when Siravo picked up a point on the first hole after shooting two shots under Lewis.  The opposition countered with points on holes four and five to pull ahead and eventually used the advantage en route to a two-point lead after the final hole.
  • Freshman William Walsh (San Mateo, Calif./Junipero Serra HS) tied with a challenging opponent, Jake Hall.  The opposition had the edge throughout the first 10 holes, leading by two at the turn before Walsh started to come back.  The Wave gained a point on the first hole to come within one and tied things up on the second.  He then picked up another pair of points on holes four and five to lead by two.  Tennessee picked up a point on the sixth, however, and tied the match on hole eight.  Each player finished with a four on the ninth to tie.
  • Freshman Kristoffer Kuvaas (Houston, Texas/The Village School) faced Evan Woosley-Reed, dropping a tightly-contested battle 1UP.  The Wave led after snagging a point on the first hole, and though the opposition tied things up, Kuvaas regained the lead and led by one through hole 16.  Woosley-Reed then earned the next two points before the turn and rode that momentum en route to a two-point lead by hole six.  Kuvaas won the eighth hole to come within one, but it would not be enough as he and the opposition tied the final hole.
  • Freshman Daniel Xu (Richmond, BC, Canada/Hugh McRoberts Secondary) dropped to Lance Simpson 3&1 to end his debut tournament with the Waves.  He earned the first point of his match for an early lead, but the opposition tied the match on hole 16 before pulling ahead on the next hole.  Xu tied things up himself before the turn, but his Tennessee opponent gained another lead after the first hole.  After dropping behind by two, Xu rallied to come within one on hole three, but Simpson picked up points on holes six and eight for a three-point lead to end the match.
