Men's Golf Bests Top-Seeded Auburn to Open Cypress Point Classic

MONTEREY, Calif. – The Pepperdine men's golf team got things underway at the Cypress Point Classic on Monday, as the #8-seeded Waves bested top-seeded Auburn in the first round, before falling to #5-seeded Texas to round out the day.

Round one featured foursomes play, with three pairs going head-to-head on each team.  Mahanth Chirravuri and Joshua Koo, as well as William Walsh and Brady Siravo, won their respective matches to put Pepperdine on top over Auburn, 2-1.  Chirravuri and Koo would remain undefeated on the day, picking up another win during round two's fourball format, which the Waves played against Texas.  The Longhorns would take the other two pairings, however to come away with the team 2-1 win.

Teams will continue on with the Cypress Point Classic tomorrow, and Pepperdine will face #3-seeded Tennessee.  The third-round format will consist of six singles matches, beginning at 9 a.m.

PLAYER SCORES
  • Sophomores Mahanth Chirravuri (Chandler, Ariz.) and Joshua Koo (Cerritos, Calif) dominated Jackson Koivun and Alex Vogelsong from Auburn in the first round, 8&7.  They started off with a tie on the first hole, but won the six more holes on the front nine to pull far ahead.  The Waves' duo maintained their composure to start the back nine and collected another pair of hole wins on holes 10 and 11 to shut the match down quickly.  They continued their success against Texas' Brian Stark and Christiaan Maas in the second round, 4&3.  Starting on the back nine for the second round, the Waves earned their first point on the 12th hole.  UT countered on the 14th to tie, but another point on the 16th would find Pepperdine in the lead once more.  Chirravuri and Koo picked up an insurance point on the 17th and led by two through the first hole on the front.  Texas picked up another point to pull within one of the Pepperdine pair, but the Waves would collect on holes four, six and seven to secure the win and gain a point for their team.
  • Sophomore Brady Siravo (Sacramento, Calif.) and freshman William Walsh (San Mateo, Calif.) started out the day with a solid 4&3 win over Auburn's J.M. Butler and Carson Bacha, went down on the first hole, but countered to flip the script with hole wins the next two opportunities.  After going back-and-forth in that manner through to a tie on the seventh, Pepperdine's pair picked up the hole on the eighth and held onto the lead at the turn.  Siravo and Walsh then collected on holes 10, 11 and 13 before riding out the lead for the win.  The duo then fell to Texas duo Nathan Petronzio and Keaton Vo, 3&1.  After tying through the first two holes starting on the back, the Waves gained a point on the 12th, but Texas countered on the 14th to tie things up once again.  Though things remained tied through the turn and past the first hole on the front, the Longhorns snagged a point on the second hole to gain an advantage.  More points on the sixth and eighth holes would end the match in the opposition's favor.
  • Freshmen Kristoffer Kuvaas (Houston, Texas) and Daniel Xu (Richmond, BC, Canada) fell to Brendan Valdes and Reed Lotter from Auburn, 7&7 in the first round.  Auburn's pair had the advantage with a win on the first hole and showed no letup throughout to snag the win from the Waves.  Though they were closer in the following round, the were downed by Jacob Sosa and Tommy Morrison, 3&4.
