MALIBU, California — The Pepperdine women's golf team plays its final tournament before the West Coast Conference Championships at next week's Chambers Bay Invitational. It'll be a good preview with four of the five WCC schools participating.
EVENT INFO — The Chambers Bay Invitational will be held at the par-72, 6,046-yard Chambers Bay Golf Course, located in University Place, Washington. There will be 36 holes on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday (April 11-12). Live scoring will be available via Birdiefire.
FIELD — In addition to Pepperdine, the 18-team field includes host Seattle, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Denver, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, Idaho, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Sacramento State, San Francisco, SMU, UCLA, Washington and Wyoming.Â
PEPPERDINE LINEUP — The Waves' lineup consists of freshman Lauren Gomez (Murrieta, Calif.), sophomore Lion Higo (Gold Coast, Australia), graduate student Megan Dennis (Bedfordshire, United Kingdom), junior Reese Guzman (Kahului, Hawai'i) and sophomore Kaleiya Romero (San Jose, Calif.). Additionally, freshman Milla Sagel (Bielefeld, Germany) will play as an individual.
RANKINGS — Pepperdine is ranked 66th as a team in both the Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarin rankings ... Individually, Lauren Gomez is 77th in Golfstat.
EVENT HISTORY — This is Pepperdine's first appearance at the Chambers Bay Invitational.
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS — Kaleiya Romero won the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational for her first college victory. She shot a 10-under 206, tying the fourth-best score in program history, and defeated BYU's Lila Galeai on the first hole of a playoff. Romero was named the WCC's Player of the Month for September ... Lauren Gomez leads the Waves with three top-10 finishes, including the Golfweek Red Sky Classic (T-10th), the Stanford Invitational (T-7th) and the Gold Rush (T-10th). She's coming off a 12th-place finish at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, her fifth top-20 effort.
ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in five different men's sports — one of just 18 schools to have accomplished this feat — and 10 overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 26 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, California, the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks #49 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
