MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine men's volleyball team will face host UCLA in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Championships, which are set to be held at Pauley Pavilion.
The matchup between the Waves and the Bruins will take place at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, with the winner moving on to face top-seeded Long Beach State in the semifinals on Thursday, May 5.
Pepperdine is making its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, a streak that's only happening for the third time in program history, and hasn't taken place since the Waves played in four straight from 1983-86. Pepperdine reached the semifinals in 2019 and competed in the opening round in 2021 (there was no NCAA Tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
The Waves have won five NCAA titles, second-most behind UCLA. Pepperdine will be making its 18th appearance at the NCAA Championships. The Waves won their 1985 and 2005 championships in Pauley Pavilion.
Pepperdine (19-9) finished third in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season but earned its spot in the NCAA Championships field by winning the MPSF Tournament, beating sixth-seeded BYU, second-seeded USC and fifth-seeded Stanford over four nights in Pauley Pavilion.
UCLA (21-4) won the MPSF regular-season title but was upset by Stanford in the MPSF Tournament semifinals. The Bruins were ranked #1 in the nation last week and earned one of the two at-large bids to the tournament. UCLA defeated the Waves twice during the regular season.
The Waves are 2-4 against UCLA at the NCAA Tournament. All six previous meetings took place in the national championship match. The last time was in 2005, which was won by the Waves in five sets at Pauley Pavilion.
The other side of the bracket for the seven-team tournament has Princeton facing North Greenville in the first round, with the winner to face Hawai'i in the next segment of the opening round, and the winner of that advancing to the semifinals to play Ball State.
