Three New School Records and PRs for Waves at Both Outdoor Meets

AZUSA, California – The Pepperdine men's and women's track teams continued to have fast outdoor performances at the Cal State LA Twilight Open and Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday and Friday.

Three new school records were set by Karl Winter in the men's 1,500 meters, Ryan Hemphill in the men's 800 meters and Thomas Lewer in the men's 400-meter hurdles at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.

Winter (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS), a senior, lowered the record in the men's 1,500 meters, collecting a time of 3:39.60, which was 0.98 seconds faster than the previously set record set by Winter at the same outdoor meet last season. Hemphill (Visalia, Calif./Redwood HS), a sophomore, posted a time of 1:50.53 in the men's 800 meters and beat the school record by 0.36 seconds, which Hemphill set last week at the Triton Invitational. For the second time this season, Lewer (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Steamboat Springs HS) broke the school record for the 400-meter hurdles finishing in a time of 56.08, which was 0.7 seconds faster.

At the Bryan Clay Invitational, senior Kyle McCabe (Westminster, Color/Holy Family HS) set a new personal record in the men's 5,000 meters crossing the finish line in a time of 14:28.68, which is also good for second on the Pepperdine all-time list. Hemphill also competed in the men's 1,500 meters with a first-place finish in his heat in a time of 3:59.08, which ranks 10th on the Pepperdine all-time list. Freshman Colin Proctor (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) ran a season best in the men's 1,500 meters in a time of 3:57.80, which leaves Proctor still ranked sixth all-time.

Proctor also collected a second-place finish in his heat in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:56.07. Sophomore Johnathan Flint (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) ran in the men's 10,000 meters clocking in at 30:56.31, which etches Flint's name fourth on the Pepperdine all-time list. Freshman Elias Spence (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area Senior HS) also marked his name fifth on the Pepperdine all-time list in the men's 10,000 meters, crossing the finish line in a time of 31:15.55. Sophomore William Watkins (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic HS) competed in the men's 400 meters with a second-place finish in a time of 50.097, which is a personal record and still ranks him second on the all-time list.

On the women's side at the Bryan Clay Invitational, junior Olivia Miller (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles HS) was the top performer in the women's 1,500 meters finishing in a time of 4:37.74, which moves her from sixth on the Pepperdine all-time list to third all-time. Seniors Annelies Ondersma (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett School) and Riley Wright (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol HS) both set season bests in the women's 1,500 meters. Wright finished in a time of 5:01.87 while Ondersma was not too far behind clocking in at 5:02.80. Senior Tiffany Egbo (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) was the top finisher for the Waves in the women's 400-meter hurdles collecting a time of 1:07.26.

At the Cal State LA Twilight Open, freshmen Caroline Fleenor (Alexandria, Va./Bishop O'Connell HS) and Brooke Bakken (Norwalk, Wis./Tomah HS) each set personal records for themselves in the women's 1,500 meters. Fleenor finished in a time of 5:26.22 while Bakken ran in a time of 5:35.31. Freshman Laren Rocco (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) notched a third-place finish in the women's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:10.09. Senior Alicia Oumsang (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding HS) ran a season best 29.28 in the women's 200 meters. Sophomore Skylar Davis (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Arts Academy) and senior Key Pearson (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Vistamar School) competed in the women's 5,000 meters, both collecting season best times. Davis notched a fourth-place finish in a time of 18:53.97 while Pearson was right behind with a fifth-place finish in a time of 18:54.41.

On the men's side at the Cal State LA Twilight Invitational, sophomore Austin Gromer (Casper, Wyo./Mountain View HS) ran a season best in the men's 1,500 meters in a time of 4:11.70, which was good for third place. Freshman Matthew Covaci (Riverwoods, Ill.) represented the Waves in the men's 400 meters finishing in a time of 59.13. Sophomore Nathaniel Lannen (Southlake, Texas/Carroll HS) competed in the men's 1,500 meters and 800 meters. Lannen clocked in the 800 meters in a time of 2:02.28 and the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:24.08.

The Waves will be back on the track in two weeks at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif. on Saturday, April 30.
