
Four Duals on the Docket in Florida for #18 Pepperdine this Week

MALIBU, Calif. – The #18 Pepperdine beach volleyball team will make the long journey to Jacksonville, Fla. this weekend to compete against three nationally ranked opponents and one receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll for the UNF Beach Invite. The Waves will go up against #4 Florida State and tournament-host North Florida on Friday before challenging #10 Florida Atlantic and #11 Georgia State on Saturday.
DUAL 20: Friday (April 1) at Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex in Jacksonville, Fla.: #18 Pepperdine (14-5) vs. #4 Florida State (16-4) at 7 a.m. PT.
DUAL 21: Friday (April 1) at Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex in Jacksonville, Fla.: #18 Pepperdine (14-5) vs. North Florida (RV) (15-6) at 1 p.m. PT.
DUAL 22: Saturday (April 2) at Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex in Jacksonville, Fla.: #18 Pepperdine (14-5) vs. #11 Georgia State (12-9) at 5 a.m. PT.
DUAL 23: Saturday (April 2) at Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex in Jacksonville, Fla.: #18 Pepperdine (14-5) vs. #10 Florida Atlantic (12-7) at 9 a.m. PT.

WAVES WEATHER: Friday in Jacksonville, the Waves will face a high of 82º with sunshine and clouds mixed. There will be light winds at about five to 10 miles per hour and a 22% chance of precipitation. On Saturday, partly cloudy skies in the morning will give way to cloudy skies during the afternoon. Slight chance of rain, but a high of 79º and winds at about five to 10 mph.
SURF REPORT: Pepperdine has gone 14-5 against opponents this season, including one win against a nationally ranked opponent. The Waves' pairs have collected a 67-28 overall record throughout five courts of action, posting a successful .705 winning percentage this season thus far.Â
Melanie Paul and Madison Shields have been strong in the top-spot for the Waves, marking a 14-5 record against opponents for a .737 success rate on that court. The duo has also collected an impressive 31-12 record by sets this season, while clinching four duals for the squad. The pairs' longest winning streak of the season was seven matches, while Shields and Paul have gone 7-3 in their last 10 matches.
Simone Priebe and McKenna Thomas have been nearly unstoppable this season, going 16-3 overall so far, collecting an impressive .842 winning percentage in the No. 2 position. The pair has only lost eight sets overall this season, going 33-8 (.805). Though playing primarily in the first flight during many competitions, they have collected on two clinches for the Waves this season and are currently working with a 9-1 record in their last 10 matches played. Priebe and Thomas's longest winning streak this season was 10-straight.
Most recently, Juju Quintero and Peyton Lewis have been playing in the No. 3 position for Pepperdine and have gone 5-7 overall as a pair together, collecting an 2-5 record in the No. 3 slot and a 3-2 output in the No. 4 position. Â The duo has put up a 15-15 record by sets so far and has gone 5-5 in their last 10 matches.
Mary Sinclair and Kate Clermont have seen time in the No. 4 position lately and have gone 6-3 so far this season as a partnership. The pair has put in a 3-2 record in the No. 3 position and a 3-1 output in the No. 4 position since starting to play alongside each other the last nine matches. They have also collected on three clinches for the Waves.
Rio Frohoff and Cameron Baklenko have been a strong partnership this season, seeing time in the No. 5 position as of late. The partners have posted an 11-6 overall record, including a 2-0 output in the No. 3 position, a 5-2 output in the No. 4 position and a 4-4 output in the No. 5 position. They have gone 5-5 in their last 10-matches and posted a 28-14 overall record by sets. Throughout all courts they've played on, the duo has also posted two clinches this season.
OPPONENT NOTES: #4 Florida State has gone 16-4 overall this season so far, including a 10-3 record on neutral sand. The Seminoles have lost only to nationally ranked opponents, falling 3-2 to then-ranked #1 UCLA and #5 TCU, 3-1 to #2 USC and 4-1 to #2 TCU. FSU has won against a fair share of nationally ranked competitors as well, defeating #6 LSU, #7 GCU, and #8 Cal Poly among others. All-time, the Waves have gone 9-2 against Florida State dating back to the 2013 campaign when Pepperdine won 3-2. The Waves went on a six-match winning streak until FSU took the squad's first-ever win against in 2017. The last time these two teams faced was in 2019 when the Seminoles won 4-1.
North Florida, a team receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll, has gone 15-6 overall this season, collecting losses to #17 Stetson, #19 FIU and #8 Cal Poly among others. Most recently, the Ospreys have swept past Nicholls State, Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans. The teams have only faced one other time, in 2012, when the Waves won 5-0 on neutral sand.
#11 Georgia State has posted a 12-9 overall record this season, falling to nationally ranked opponents LSU, Florida State, TCU, UCLA and others, while defeating nationally ranked opposition like South Carolina and Stetson. Last week, the Panthers fell to Florida International and Florida Atlantic, but won against Stetson and Coastal Carolina. All-time, the Waves have gone 6-0 against the Panthers, dating back to 2013. Of the six wins, two have been sweeps and the other four by way of a 4-1 result.
#10 Florida Atlantic has posted a 12-7 overall record this season, including a 5-6 record on neutral sand. The Owls have lost to then-ranked #3 Florida State, #6 TCU, #2 USC, #1 UCLA, #7 GCU and others, while defeating #5 LSU, #18 Stetson twice and #13 Georgia State this season. Last week, the squad picked up wins against #13 GSU, #18 Stetson and Coastal Carolina, while falling to #19 FIU. Pepperdine and FAU have faced only once before, winning 5-0 at Zuma Beach in 2013.
LOOKING AHEAD: The following week, the Waves will return to California, first making the short trip to Long Beach State on April 7 before hosting CSUN on April 9 at 11 a.m. The Saturday dual against the Matadors will also serve as the Waves' Senior Day and seniors will be honored at center court prior to the match.
