
#16 Beach Volleyball to Compete in WCC Invitational

MALIBU, Calif. – The #16 Pepperdine beach volleyball team will head to Santa Cruz, Calif. to take part in the WCC Invitational against both league and local opponents. Those in the tournament will play modified pool play action on day one before moving to tournament-style competition to close things up.
DUAL 16: Friday (March 25) at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, Calif.: #16 Pepperdine (11-4) vs. San Jose State (6-10) at 10 a.m. PT.
DUAL 17: Friday (March 25) at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, Calif.: #16 Pepperdine (11-4) vs. in WCC Invitational Tournament at TBD.
DUAL 18: Saturday (March 26) at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, Calif.: #16 Pepperdine (11-4) in WCC Invitational Tournament at TBD.

WAVES WEATHER: Friday will have a high of 71º in Santa Cruz, partly cloudy, with winds going West at roughly five to 10 miles per hour. Saturday will have a high of 70º with a partly to mostly cloudy climate and winds similar to the previous day.Â
TOURNAMENT DETAILS: The tournament will begin on Friday with modified pool play. The Waves, seeded No. 2 in the tournament, will first go head-to-head with San Jose State at 10 a.m. Then, those teams that won in the first round will play against each other in the second round, while those teams that lost will play against other teams that lost.  Saturday will feature Gold and Silver Bracket Tournament play based on seeding from Friday's results.

SURF REPORT: The Waves have gone 11-4 this season, with one win against a nationally ranked opponent. Pepperdine has gone 5-2 on neutral sand and 2-2 on the road this season, while remaining perfect 4-0 at home.
Melanie Paul and Madison Shields have remained steady at the No. 1 position this season, going 11-4 overall and 7-3 in their last 10 matches. The duo has also gone 25-9 in sets played this season and have clinched the win on four separate occasions for the squad.
Simone Priebe and McKenna Thomas have been quite the pair for the Waves in the No. 2 position, having gone 13-2 overall this season and 8-2 in their last 10 matches. The duo is currently on a seven-match winning streak and holds an impressive 27-6 (.818) sets record this season. The pair has also clinched for the Waves once this season, though typically play in the first flight of competition.
Mary Sinclair and Kate Clermont have been most recently playing in the No. 3 position for the Waves, collecting a 3-2 overall record after starting their partnership with a 3-0 run against various opponents. Â Juju Quintero and Peyton Lewis have been in the No. 4 position as of late, collecting a 4-4 record against.Â
Cameron Baklenko and Rio Frohoff have also spent time in numerous positions for Pepperdine, going 9-5 overall this season with a 2-0 record in the No. 2 position, 5-2 record in the No. 4 position and a 2-3 record in the No. 5 position.Â
Many pairs have also seen time on the exhibition court, with Savana Greene holding a solid 11-1 record while playing with numerous Waves' partners.
OPPONENT NOTES: Pepperdine will first face off against San Jose State, a team that has gone 6-10 overall this season, most recently defeating Oregon and Saint Mary's 3-2 and San Francisco 5-0. This will be the first time the Waves have faced the Spartans all-time.
Other teams competing in the tournament are #5 LMU (14-1), Portland (3-6), Santa Clara (5-8), Pacific (0-8), Saint Mary's (11-5) and San Francisco (1-8).
LOOKING AHEAD: Next week, the Waves head to Jacksonville, Fla. For the North Florida Invite on April 1 and 2. Pepperdine will begin the tournament on Friday against # Florida State and North Florida, before closing things up on Saturday against Georgia State and Florida Atlantic.
