FULLERTON, California – Kyle McCabe and Karl Winter of the Pepperdine men's track team set new school records at the Astro Ai Distance Carnival at Cal State Fullerton on Friday night.
Â
McCabe (Westminster, Colo./Holy Family HS) broke his own school record in the 10,000 meters finishing in a time of 29:45.99, which was 38.24 seconds faster than his own previous record that he set last year at the Bryan Clay Invitational in a time of 30:24.23.
Â
"The preparation for this race differed from most others because only Karl and I ran at Fullerton tonight. I tried to replicate the process I had when I ran a 10k on the track last year, which included listening to Olivia Rodrigo's "good 4 u" pre-race," said McCabe. "I aimed to run 72 second laps for at least the first 5k,15:00 pace, but the race got out a little slow. My coaches and teammates kept telling me to stay calm and relaxed, so I kept my position and waited for the pace to speed up. Eventually it did, and we started running 70 second laps, even one or two 69s. That led me to running only 4 seconds off my 5k personal record in the second half. I really surprised myself with my race today and felt strong throughout, and you can't ask for much more than that."
Â
Winter (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's HS), who set the 5,000-meter record in 2021 at the Westmont Sunshine Collegiate, beat his record by notching a time of 13:57.52. His time that he collected today was 30.6 seconds faster than his previous record of 14:31.58. Winter also marked a first-place finish in the 5,000 meters.
Â
"The plan today was to run a 14-minute pace and see if I could hold it. The race went out a little slower than that, but I was able to close the last two laps quickly enough to dip under," said Winter. "I'm very excited about the result in only my second 5,000 ever — believe it or not, it was a lot of fun! My teammates and coaches believed I could do it, and that made all the difference. It's still early in the outdoor season, so hopefully it is a sign of good things to come."
Â
"I am so proud of Karl and Kyle! They have been putting in a lot of quality work this season and it was great to see it pay off with new personal records and school records so early in the season," said head coach Lauren Floris. "They both ran really smart, perfectly executed races that were so fun to watch."
Â
Winter and McCabe will join the rest of the Pepperdine men's and women's track team at the Oxy Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic on Saturday, March 12. The meet will begin at 10 a.m.
