Waves Collect New Personal Records at Oxy Distance Carnival

LOS ANGELES, California – The Pepperdine men's and women's track teams finished its third outdoor meet of the season at the Oxy Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic on Saturday.

Sophomore Ryan Hemphill (Visalia, Calif./Redwood HS) highlighted the meet with a second-place finish in the 800 meters finishing in a time of 1:53.61, which was a personal record and also only 2.14 seconds away from the school record. Freshman Colin Proctor (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) also set a new personal record in the 800-meters in a time of 1:57.33.

Sophomore Will Watkins (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic HS) competed in the 400 meters and ran in a time of 50.48, which was a personal record. Junior Jaad Abduljawad (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia/Cal Coast Academy) was the top performer in the 100 meters collecting a time of 11.36. Junior Marcus Flint (Durango, Colo./Durango HS) represented the Waves in the 1,500 meters and clocked in at 4:11.09, which was a new personal record.

In the last event for the men, freshman Elias Spence (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area Senior HS), sophomore Johnathan Flint (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) and Hemphill all set new personal records in the 5,000 meters. Flint clocked in at 14:55, while Spence was not too far behind at 15:17 and Hemphill shortly thereafter at 15:35.

On the women's side, freshman Kaley Peterson (Sunnyvale, Calif./Saint Francis High School) had the top time for Pepperdine in the 400 meters, crossing the finish line at 59.51, which was good for fifth place. Peterson also was the top performer for the Waves in the 100 meters notching a time of 12.69. Senior Tiffany Egbo (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) also competed in the 400 meters and won her heat in a time of 1:00.52.Â

Junior Skyler Danley (Easton, Pa./Easton Area HS) also had a fifth-place finish in her debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking in at 11:48.13. In the 1,500-meters, junior Olivia Miller (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles HS) had the top time finishing in 4:52.57. Freshman Brooke Bakken (Norwalk, Wisc./Tomah HS) also set a new personal record in the 1,500 meters clocking in at 5:35.87. Freshman Lauren Rocco (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) raced in the 100-meter hurdles and recorded a time of 17.09, which was a personal record and heat win.

In the final event for the women's which also was the 5,000 meters, freshmen Megan LaCamera (Burbank, Calif./Burbank HS) and Eden Mittelsdorf (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood HS) and sophomore Skylar Davis (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Arts Academy) secured new personal records all under 19 minutes. LaCamera crossed first for the Waves in a time of 18.07.33. Mittelsdorf finished in a time of 18:53 and Davis was under 19.

"Occidental is known for its fast times and it did not disappoint today! 13 of our athletes ran personal bests and everyone looked amazing out there," said head coach Lauren Floris. "Smart pacing, solid tactics and confident racing across the board. Coming up, we have a few weekends off of racing so we're going to be putting in a lot of quality work over the next three weeks before hitting the second half of the season."
Pepperdine will have a two-week break before heading inland to Northridge, Calif., to race at the CSUN Invite hosted by Cal State Northridge on Saturday, April 2.Â
