Hellmuth Earns WCC Freshman of the Year; Six Garner WCC Acclaim

MALIBU, Calif. — Six from the Pepperdine women's volleyball team garnered All-West Coast Conference postseason accolades, as announced the league office on Monday afternoon.  Emily Hellmuth highlighted the honors after earning WCC Freshman of the Year acclaim, while Meg Brown and Grace Chillingworth each earned first team recognition.
 
In addition to the top honor and first team nods, Riley Patterson garnered second team honors and Isabel Zelaya tabbed honorable mention status.  Hellmuth also earned a spot on the WCC All-Freshman team, alongside Vanessa Polk.
 
Emily Hellmuth – WCC Freshman of the Year, WCC All-Freshman Team
Hellmuth (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park HS) is the 15th Wave to capture the top honor of its kind and the third-straight as Chillingworth and Brown went back-to-back in 2020 and 2021 respectively.  Hellmuth had a team-best 2.90 kills/set, having played in 103 sets with 19 starts this season.  She is third on the squad with 330.0 total points and has added 35 digs and 50 blocks with six solo rejections for the Waves.
 
Meg Brown – All-WCC First Team
Brown (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) had a standout regular season for the Waves, leading the squad with an impressive .367 hitting percentage after tabbing 302 kills and 2.82 kills/set.  Her success rate on the attack ranked fourth in the WCC and 48th nationally.  After playing in all 107 sets with 29 starts for the Waves, she averaged an impressive 0.91 blocks, 0.87 digs and 0.29 aces per set for the Waves.  She was second on the squad with 31 aces and with 97 total blocks, including eight solo rejections.  This is the second first team nod for Brown, as she garnered the accolade in 2020, along with WCC Freshman of the Year honors.  She also tabbed second team recognition last season and has been a WCC Offensive Player of the Week twice and Defensive once throughout her career thus far.
 
Grace Chillingworth – All-WCC First Team
Chillingworth (Tustin, Calif./Foothill HS) led Pepperdine with 309 total kills this season, averaging 2.89 kills/set on a .220 clip.  She also played in all 107 sets with 29 starts for the Waves, producing a team-high 40 aces, marking 0.37 aces/set throughout.  Her ace/set ratio ranked fifth in the league.  In an all-around effort, she was second on the squad with 247 total digs and 2.31 digs/set, while additionally adding 66 total blocks with six solo rejections for 0.62 blocks/set for the squad.  Chillingworth tabbed two separate WCC Offensive weekly honors this season.  Last season, she tabbed WCC Freshman of the Year acclaim, while also earning spots on both the All-WCC honorable mention and All-Freshman teams.
 
Riley Patterson – All-WCC Second Team
Patterson (Sonora, Calif./Sonora HS/Pacific) led both the Waves and the entire West Coast Conference with 443 total digs and 4.14 digs/set this season.  In her debut season with Pepperdine, she started all 29 matches and played in all 107 sets for the Waves, helping the cause by adding 18 aces and 99 sets throughout.  Patterson tabbed WCC Defensive Player of the Week honors three weeks throughout the regular season as well.
 
Isabel Zelaya – All-WCC Honorable Mention
Zelaya (Tomball, Texas/Concordia Lutheran HS) was a mainstay on the court for Pepperdine this season, leading the squad with 1,041 total assists and 10.11 assists/set, ranking third and fourth in the WCC respectively. She was also good for 2.02 digs, 0.47 blocks, 0.61 kills and 0.19 aces per set.  Zelaya also currently ranks fifth in the Pepperdine women's volleyball record books with 3,963 total assists and sixth with 10.43 assists/set throughout her four-year career.  She was an AVCA Pacific South All-Region first team honoree in 2020 and tabbed All-WCC first team acclaim in both 2020 and 2021. 
 
Vanessa Polk – WCC All-Freshman Team
Polk (Saint Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) has made an immediate impact for the Waves in her debut season as well, leading the team with 115 total blocks, including 20 solo rejections for the Waves.  Her current 1.21 blocks/set average ranks fourth among teams in the WCC and is tied for eighth in the Pepperdine women's volleyball single-season (rally scoring era) record books.  She has also produced 1.42 kills/set for the Waves this season, totaling 1.41 kills/set on a .209 success rate.
