SAN DIEGO, California – The Pepperdine women's soccer team continued the winning momentum and defeated San Diego State 3-0 on Sunday night.
The Waves scored in the first five minutes of play on a SDSU own goal, led in by Leyla McFarland, who also scored not long after the second half started. McFarland drew a penalty seven minutes later and Trinity Watson gave the Waves (2-0-0) the third goal of the match against the Aztecs (1-1-0)
GOALS
Pepperdine 5': After a few passes down field, senior forward Leyla McFarland (Bonita, Calif./Eastlake HS) hustled to the box between teammates and Aztecs, for a shot that was thought as a save, but made its way through the goalkeeper's legs for the opening team goal.
Pepperdine 53': Sophomore forward Tori Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) knocked a shot off the crossbar that landed straight down in the box. McFarland sneakily made her way through the Aztec defenders and found the back of the net for the go-ahead goal for the Waves.
Pepperdine 60': From a down field pass, McFarland dribbled her way to about 15-yards and drew a penalty when she was knocked down by an Aztec defender. Senior defender Trinity Watson (Ocean Beach, Calif./ Point Loma HS) stepped in to take the free kick and give the Waves the final goal of the match.

QUOTE ABLE
Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "First of all, SDSU has a very talented team and I think they are going to do very well this year. As for our group, we're super proud of the performance we put out on the field tonight. We needed to be athletic, tough and yet composed, by and large, we felt we did that, and in so doing created some beautiful moments of team soccer. Goals obviously win games and the goal scorers and goal creators all did an amazing job tonight, but I also felt the play of our defense was excellent. Our back six needed to be great tonight and they were. We're going to play a lot of road games this year and we've told the women how tough we will need to be on the road to make our dreams a reality. So to start this season with two big results on the road is a great foundation to build on."
