Women’s Soccer Beats Cal In Malibu 1-0

MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine women's soccer (2-0-1), for the first time in program history, beat Cal (0-1-2) in Malibu 1-0 Thursday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field.
"This is an absolute war every time we play [Cal]," head coach Tim Ward said. "To get the result today meant so much to us, not only for our team, but we wanted to make sure everyone [in attendance] knew that we will give everything for the Pepperdine jersey every single time."
Going into the day undefeated at 1-0-1, the Waves were searching for the program's first win in Malibu over Cal, ever. Beating them in Berkeley 1-0 off the head of Lily Stewart last season, Tari Frahm last saw the Golden Bears put a dagger through Pepperdine's 2024 NCAA tournament hopes in the opening round with a goal in the 111th minute of play to walk away victorious 2-1.
In a game of momentum swings, Pepperdine took the first shots on goal with an early attempt from Julia Quinonez just 17 seconds in, forcing a Cal save. The Waves outshot the Bears in the half 6-5 as neither side was able to put one into the back of the net. Pepperdine took their only two corners of the match in the opening 45 minutes, unable to capitalize.
As the second half got underway, shots were firing from both ends of the field. Just two minutes after Cal attempted a shot, Ariana Salvador subbed into the match, almost immediately finding the ball to thread it through to freshman Sam Hosford, who finished it into the far corner of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Holding onto the lead for the remaining 30 minutes, the Waves came out victorious despite being outshot on the afternoon 8-11. With two saves, Jillian Medvecky recorded her first shutout of the season and the 11th of her career.
Emjae Soriano and Kate Ryan got their first collegiate start this afternoon.
Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Waves head to Texas for two matches after taking this weekend off. Texas Tech and No. 6 Baylor are on deck for Pepperdine Aug. 27 and 30.
