Box Score PROVO, Utah – The Pepperdine baseball team got three home runs from
Billy Cook, a feat not accomplished since 1995, in Saturday's 14-7 loss to BYU.
The Waves (18-24, 10-14 WCC) got the scoring started early, but the Cougars (23-27, 15-12 WCC) answered quickly, taking a lead that they would never relinquish.
BIG WAVES
- Senior utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) had a heck of a day, going 4-for-5 with three home runs and five RBI. It is the first time a Pepperdine baseball player has hit three home runs in a game since David Newhan did it in 1995.
- Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went 3-for-4 on the day with three singles and an RBI.
- Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) went 2-for-3 on the day with two singles and a double.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Cook opened the scoring up early for the Waves, hitting his team and West Coast Conference-leading 14th home run of the year. The Cougars answered with a solo shot of their own in the home half to tie the game. After a single, another home run gave BYU a 3-1 lead through one inning.
Back-to-back solo home runs for the Cougars extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second inning. An RBI single pushed the BYU lead to 6-1 through two innings.
In the top of the third, Cook hit his second home run of the game, this one off the scoreboard in left field, cutting the Cougar lead to 6-3 and scoring
Wyatt Young, who singled. BYU led 6-3 through three innings of play.
A two-run triple in the bottom of the fourth gave the Cougars an 8-3 lead. A single then brought in their ninth run. The Cougars got a bases-loaded double that scored three to extend the lead to 12-3 through four innings.
In the fifth, Young singled before Cook hit his third home run of the day, getting the game to 12-5 in favor of the Cougars through five innings.
Cook led off the seventh inning with a single and was moved to second on a
Justin Lutes walk.
Reese Alexiades then shot a ball through the right side to score Cook and cut the Cougars lead to 12-6. BYU answered with a two-run home run to take a 14-8 lead through seven innings.

The Waves finish up the season next weekend against Pacific. In another Thursday-Saturday series, game one is scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. in Stockton.
