Waves to Compete at WCC Championships in El Segundo

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine beach volleyball team, ranked 13th in the AVCA coaches poll this week, will travel to Dockweiler Beach in El Segundo, Calif. to compete in the West Coast Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday.
WCC CHAMPIONSHIPS: Friday-Saturday (April 30-May 1) at Dockweiler Beach in El Segundo, Calif.: First match: #13 Pepperdine vs. Portland at 10:30 a.m.

WAVES WEATHER: On Friday in El Segundo, there will be a high of 76˚ with sunny skies and winds running West at 10 to 20 miles per hour. On Saturday, there will be a high of 70˚ with South to Southwest winds at 10 to 20 miles per hour.
WCC CHAMPIONSHIPS FIELD: Pepperdine heads into the tournament as the No. 2 seed, while PCH Cup rival LMU will enter as the top-seed. Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and Pacific round out the top five, while San Francisco and Portland close out the field of seven. LMU ranks 5th in the AVCA national coaches poll this week, while the Waves rank 13th and Saint Mary's is receiving votes.
The Waves have faced only two WCC opponents this season, playing each LMU and Saint Mary's twice. The Lions downed Pepperdine 4-1 on both occasions, with one road and one home dual, while the Waves and Gaels split a pair of neutral site duals. Pepperdine's first opponent Portland has gone 1-7 this season.
WAVE REPORT: The Waves have gone 11-15 overall this season, with a 3-6 record at home, 4-6 output on the road and 4-3 record on neutral sand. Of those 26 matches, the Waves have faced 17 nationally ranked teams, winning three of those matches. Overall, Pepperdine has collected a 63-67 pair record, posting an even 13-13 match record in the No. 1 position, 17-9 record in the No. 2 and 3 positions and has posted 9-17 and 7-19 records in the No. 4 and 5 positions respectively.
In the No. 1 position, four pairings have seen time, with Carly Skjodt and Melanie Paul collecting the best output with a 5-1 record in the position, while also going 1-0 in the No. 2 slot. Brook Bauer and Alexis Filippone have also faced off with opponents in the No. 1 slot, posting a 3-1 record overall, while also going 4-2 in the No. 2 position and 1-0 in the No. 3 position. Simone Priebe and Melanie Paul have also seen time in several positions, leading with an 8-2 output in the No. 2 slot.
Sutton Mactavish has been strong in the No. 2 position, most recently posting a 5-1 record alongside Mary Sinclair and a 4-0 output with Priebe. The Waves have had multiple pairings in each the No. 4 and 5 positions.
WAVES IN PREVIOUS WCC TOURNAMENTS: Pepperdine entered the first-ever West Coast Conference Championships as the top seed in 2016. The tournament was played at Ocean Park Beach in Santa Monica, Calif. and the Waves went an undefeated 3-0. In 2017 and 2018, the Waves repeated with 3-0 performances to win the team's second- and third-straight WCC titles. In 2019, the Waves entered the tournament as the top seed, but was felled twice on day two in the back-to-back finals to fall to PCH Cup rival LMU for the title. There was no WCC Tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
