#11 Pepperdine Suffers Pair of Losses in Palo Alto

PALO ALTO, Calif. – On the first day of the Stanford Tournament on Saturday up North, the Pepperdine beach volleyball team was felled in a pair of duals to #12 Cal and Saint Mary's, a team receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

Three Waves (10-14) pairings collected wins on the day, with two coming from different duos in the No. 3 position. Pepperdine was downed 3-2 by WCC opponent Saint Mary's and 4-1 by #12 Cal, with both opposing teams earning their respective program's first win over the Waves. Pepperdine will continue the tournament with host #10 Stanford tomorrow at 12 p.m.

MATCH RECAPS
In the first match, the Waves were downed on courts two and four to kick off the first flight. Though Sutton Mactavish and Simone Priebe collected a win in the No. 3 position, the Gaels were able to collect their first career program win against the Waves with a three-set clinch on court five. Carly Skjodt and Melanie Paul closed out the dual with a three-set win on court one.

In the second match, Pepperdine went down 2-0 with opponent victories on courts two and four. In the second flight, the Bears clinched the overall with a two-set win in the top-spot. Alexis Filippone and Brook Bauer put the Waves on the board with a 21-14, 21-9 win in the No. 3 position, though the opposition took a win on court five to close the match with a 4-1 win.

NEXT UP
Tomorrow, the Waves remain in Palo Alto to take on tournament host, #10 Stanford at 12 p.m. before competing in either the Championship or Consolation Match at 2 p.m.
