FULLERTON, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team had another great offensive performance on Sunday, defeating Cal State Fullerton 10-4.
Ryan Johnson had a career day, going 4-for-5 including a home run.
The Waves (3-7) got out in front early, scoring four runs in the first inning and the Titans (4-6) could not keep up.
BIG WAVES
- Sophomore utility Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) had an electric day at the plate. He went 4-for-5 with five RBI. He was also just a double short of the cycle, hitting a two-run home run in the first and a three-RBI triple in the sixth.
- Senior utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) had his best offensive day of the year thus far, going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in the first.
- Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) went 1-for-5 on the day, but the one hit was a big one: a solo shot in the third inning.
- Freshman RHP Brandon Llewellyn (Colleyville, Texas/IMG Academy) threw 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, and struck out two batters.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves got off to a scorching stater, as after a
Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) leadoff walk, Cook drove a ball into deep left field, sailing over the wall to give the Waves a 2-0 lead.
Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) was then hit by a pitch and came around to score on the Waves' second home run of the inning, this time from Johnson. Through one inning of play, the Waves led 4-0.
After an uneventful second inning, the Waves got going again, as Lutes pulled a ball way over the right field wall to give the Waves their third home run in as many innings, this one a solo shot to give the Waves a 5-0 lead. After Johnson singled through the left side,
Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) doubled to the right-center gap, plating Johnson for the Waves' sixth run of the afternoon. Cal State Fullerton answered in the home half of the third with two runs of their own on an RBI groundout and a solo home run. Through three innings, the Waves led 6-2.
In the fifth, The Waves got two singles from Johnson and
Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS), and Johnson was brought home on a Caparis sacrifice fly, giving the Waves a 7-2 lead. The Titans got a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-groundout, and the Waves led 7-3 through five.
Pepperdine loaded the bases in the sixth inning on three straight singles from Young, Cook and Modlin. Johnson then stepped up and tripled down the right field line, clearing the bases and bringing in his fifth RBI of the afternoon. The Waves led 10-3 through five and a half innings of play.
Llewellyn threw five innings, coming out of the game in the bottom of the sixth, as he was replaced by
Trevor Kniskern (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Pompano Beach HS). The Titans got their final run of the game on an RBI-single.
